We heard on the radio yesterday that the government are giving away fresnel lenses to attach to continental HGV rear view mirrors when they arrive in UK to try and reduce the incidence of 'side swipe' accidents involving LHD HGV in UK. We think they said there were 26 a week.

I can see an MHF argument arising Smile

Should we be spending our money this way? I would point out that a fatal accident on the roads costs us £1 million pounds or so.

I voted No 2.

Or.. subject all foreign HGV's to a compulsory toll/vignette just like UK trucks (in the main) have to pay abroad and divert a percentage of this to fund the lenses.

I understand the lens cost £3.

I am sure anyone living near the ports through which the foreign lorries enter the UK as I do will vote to give them the lens free for the sake of road safety.

One literally takes one's life in one's hands driving on the roads leading from the port of Dover and the Channel tunnel.

Pretty dangerous in other parts of the country too, this story is more than a bit shocking...

I also voted two, surely it is the responsibilty of drivers to make sure they have proper mirrors for this country? I cannot see the Frenchies attaching a mirror on my van when I leave the port of Calais

I reckon the foriegn companies that deliver over here should fit them as standard on their vehicles, its a good idea to reduce accidents, we should not have to pay for them, my friend and her husband had a lucky escape with one of these HGV's clipping their car on the M6. I voted 2
