Good sound advice Colin.
The person using the camera should handle it to see if they feel comfortable with it |

Thanks to everyone who has replied.
I have decided after all to give another small gift for Christmas and to take our daughter out for the day in the new year for her to make her own choice.
I appreciate your responses.

If you never want to go above a 6 x 4 print then a 2Mpixel is fine. More pixels bigger prints. Higer pixel counts can lead to other problems.
|
I remember reading somewhere that the human eye can't differentiate more accurately than 3Mpx @ 6X4, and 6Mpx @ A4 sheet sized. I don't understand the race for higher pixel counts - it's all just marketing hype (for most snappers, anyway).
I totally concur with the viewfinder opinions, too. I can't hold my tiddly Olympus steady enough with my arms out without the image stabilisation on. I still prefer my older Olympus 3Mpx.
I used to reommend that people buy digicams from a 'proper' camera manufacturer - I figured the lens optical quality was more important than almost anything else. Now you have Panasonic and Sony using 'proper' optical lenses (Sony use Karl Zeiss), so I think that no longer applies.
So what actually is your budget? What seems expensive to one person might be very reasonable to another.

One thing that I NOW consider important (having discovered the poor performance of my current camera- Pentax vario) is shutter lag. I don't recall seeing this quoted in specs but it is important. Too often subjects have moved between pressing the shutter release and the camera waking up and taking the picture!

That's fascinating - what a difference from the Sony DSC N2 at 0.14 seconds, up to 1.8 seconds from the Nikon Coolpix L3. If you click on the column titles, you can re-order the information.
Thanks for the link

Hi
Bear1 has hit on probably the most important aspect in my opinion. As a pro portrait photographer I use a pro camera but I have recently been thinking about getting a snapper camera for around the home.
If you are not going to be blowing up photos bigger then 10x8 and you are in average light conditions then you only need a few million pixels.
Quite a few years agoI bought a Kodak digitalcamera. It cost Ģ1000 (phew) 1mil pixel and produced pin sharp, good contrast photos but with a shutter lag of a couple of seconds was useless.

The more pixels the bigger the print - but - more pixels also gives you the opportunity to crop small areas and still have enough pixels for a decent print.
