As owners of a 1991 Hymer we took out RAC Arrival through the C&CC club as they are the only ones who will insure our age of vehicle. Also no restriction on length.

Does anyone have any experience of claiming with an old vehicle through RAC Arrival?

The reason I ask is that we have just had the renewal and reading the small print (been caught out before with home insurance - they changed the policy on renewal without telling us) we noticed an age restriction of 11 years and excesses for old vehicles etc etc etc.

It is possible that they have just sent us the usual European Cover booklet and not the RAC Arrival one but I want to make sure.

I will ring them tomorrow to check that we are getting the cover we asked for but just wondered if anyone had ever called them out to an older vehicle and if so did they dodge it or did they pay up??

Pat

Update...

I rang them and they say that we are getting the discount through being members of the C&CC and that the age and length of the vehicle is, therefore, not a problem. Whew!!

It would still be comforting to hear from someone who has used them in Europe though. We are off for three months at the end of this month.

Always read the documents insurance companies send you on renewal. We thought our home was protected on a "new for old" basis which is the policy we chose. When we came to claim for a major flood they said we could only have second had value!! They said that we had been notified of the change in the policy at renewal. Needless to say we changed insurance companies and are very careful now.

We took out RAC europe cover (not "arrival" though) and had to call on them when our timing belt broke on the uphill section of the motorway about 20miles short of Calais October 30 and the service was wonderful. We have a 1991 Ducato 2.5 maxi camper. A French motorway service van stopped by and they were very helpful telling us to press the button on the emergency help box and that its location was automatically registered with the Gendarme. The Friendly Gendarme arrived within a few minutes and took a quick look at the engine and called a breakdown truck which arrived in about 15 mins. The driver loaded us up and made a few phone calls. He then took us to the SeaFrance ferry and organized a new departure on the next available. We were towed on and off the ferry and later picked up by the RAC and transferred to a private company for delivery to home in the midlands. We arrived home a bit shell shocked but only some 7 hours later than originally planned. During our return we had many phone calls from both the English and French operatives checking we were ok. The van shows 71000 miles and everyone tells us that the belts always break at 70000, now they tell me. Ok its a long story but I cant praise the RAC highly enough. It took a month to get it fixed and £1000 so please everyone get your belts checked.

Thanks Philip

We changed the belt last year!! So hopefully we shouldn't have that happen to us. They did come out when hubby managed to put petrol in instead of deisel Embarassed and were very good but that was in this country. Glad to hear they were as good abroad.

My RAC membership with european cover states no van over 11 years in Europe!

My van is 11 years old next year. Guess it'll have to have a thorough service before heading off in 2009.

Our Hymer is 1990, B694 and we very reason we chose SAFEGUARD was because they included the AA recovery both here and abroad in the cost of the insurance. This will run out when the machine is 20 years old - we will worry about cover again in 2010!! Last weekend we had reason to use the service when we lost our fuel pump on the M6. As we are 4,000kg the AA had to arrange for a heavy duty recovery vehicle, we were first taken off the motorway in 25 minutes - I must say despite a delay in the second machine arriving the whole operation was very professionally done and we were pleased to be carried home to Essanjay!!

Patp checked his papers, the Arrival scheme (only through C&CC) and so have I - no age, length, width, height restrictions on "proprietory" vehicles. Non-proprietory conversions (coach conversions is mentioned as an example in my paperwork) have a weight limit of 4.5 tonnes, length of 7.5m and width of 2.3m.
Don't confuse standard RAC membership with the Arrival scheme. Wink

Thanks Bognormike I was just about to say that.
Of course you have to add the cost of C&CC membership into the equation. We of course have no choice. Didn't know about Safeguard though. Do they do full timing insurance? I don't think they do.
