Thank you all for the answers, especially Rapide561, Kijana and G2EWS.
Wow...............This is ridiculous. Not all you guys/gals, but the fact that there appears to be no real answer??
I am new to the Motorhome game and the ability to tow a car was important to us, therefore I thought it best that I should understand and know the rules. I did search this website for an answer, but found it impossible to find, so I decided to search for a more authoritative statement.
This I found, from what I believe, on the "National Trailer and Towing Association Ltd" website, however it was not the answer I had expected. I have seen plenty of MH users towing cars so did not think for one second it would be a problem.
To be honest, I believe NTTA to have the correct answer, but I find it incredible and extremely poor that this issue has not been resolved. I'm totally amazed and dumb founded that no one senior within the MH world has not forced an answer to this, especially considering how many are doing it. Obviously filed in the "too difficult box".
Now I don't know what to do?? and feeling a bit down and disgusted.
Are there any other laws or rules that we MH users pay lip service to?? It would be nice to know now, before my motorhome arrives in Jan.
ATB to all, 777.

I can reverse my Terios straight back, when on the A frame behind my Winnebago.
The law states that a trailer must be capable of being reversed. It doesn't state how far or straight or corners.
Another example of the ambiguity involved in the it's legal / it's illegal arguement.
I, if stopped would pull out the Daihatsu Terios owners manual, and show whoever had stopped me the section that refers to towing the Terios on an A frame Even more confusion!
Hi Dougie
I think a 4 wheel farm trailer is steered in a different way. I am good at reversing have done it for years with caravans and trailers but my old Smart did not reverse without the wheels spinning round. Got stuck in the summer floods and had to unhitch with the aid of a policeman!
We have got rid of that and have a normal car now so it might work.
I will try it again over Xmas as we are taking the unit down south and will let you know how I get on.
Hi Triple7
If you haven't got your MH yet, I would wait and see if you really need to tow.
We find our car a pain if we are touring so don't use it unless we intend to stay on a site for a few days in this country.
If we did not have the car I would certainly not choose towing, I would hire a car and if we change MH next year then I will not bother.

So why tow it/take it?

Well don't tow it then

Why not hire a car now then? What difference does changing the MH make? (other than not having a tow bar fitted of course.
Sorry to be a little negative but you say you will not tow in the future for the reasons you stated.
Nobody is FORCING you to tow now are they?
You have changed cars and the 2nd one you bought has an A frame fitted.
Seems a lot of bother and expense if you not really bothered to have such a pain.
Come on, you know you really want to tow a car without any trouble and have the use of it at anytime whilst you are away. Admit it

You make my point so well!!!
New car was a swap and is used as our 2nd car so very little expense.
Yes I do like the use when we are on site but genuinely are having 2nd thoughts.
Only made points so that any new user can make his own decision. Each to his own.

Could do the same with my Suzuki Vitara , section in hand book on recreational towing.

It's heavy reading but here is the Council Directive 71/320/EEC relating to the braking devices of certain categories of motor vehicles and of their trailers.

And here is the simplified version from NTTA

Section’s - 6. Brakes and 13. The Law, about sums it all up.
But the above only applies if the second EC Directive on Driving Licences (91/439/EEC) doesn't apply. (Just to make it even more complicated)
