I did a side by side test of a pair of panels, one semi-flexible and one glass. The semi-flex panel specced output was slightly greater than the glass one. The overall sizes were very similar. Under both overcast and bright sun conditions the glass panel provided more output.

With luck the report may come out in MMM in a few months.

Thanks Clive

could you just enlarge on the actual output differences that you found between the two panels that you tested

Hi Trek,
No I didn't get the flexible type no reason other than I was unsure of their efficiency. In the end we had an 80watt panel fitted in Portugal last winter together with a good regulator and 500watt pure sine wave inverter. Although the setup wasn't cheap we are satisfied with it and the amount of free camping we did over the winter paid for more than half the installation. In October we're off to France again and will be using the Aires so we will recoup more of the cost. We only have one 80 amp hour battery but find that is more than sufficient for our needs having changed the halogen lights for LED units. Even in January in Spain we topped our battery up by 10 amp hours in one day so we're quite pleased with our setup.
Regards, SorC

hi,
if I understand correctly don't all panels need air circulation to stop them overheating and become less efficient. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Unless they are cooled by conduction as is the case of the 5mm thick semi flex panels. But if you mount it to a polystyrene insulated roof .....

Regarding the difference, you will have to wait for the article for the details suffice to say I would buy another glass one unless there was a very good reason not too. Significantly cheaper too.

an update to answer my own question from 2009

I eventually bought a GB-SOL 70watt semi-flexible solar panel direct from their factory & it worked well

http://www.gb-sol.co.uk/leisure_industry/

that is until the other day now its dead- not even two years old !

so that was a waste of £300

plus its stuck on the roof with sikaflex so I suppose its up there for ever
