I think someone said before that it was possible to fit a dual LNB to an Oyster system. If this is the case, where do I get a dual (or second) LNB from, and is it straightforward to fit?

Dougie.

Hi Dougie,

Yes A dual LNB is very simple to fit, I have already done it. All you do is remove the old "single" LNB and fit the new "double" one in it's place, connecting an additional coax cable to the 2nd output of the LNB to the 2nd input on your SKY+ box. (assuming you already have your SKY+ box). If your dish is already aligned to the sattelite signal, I doubt that there will be any further adjustment needed except perhaps the skew, as the physical characteristics of the new LNB may be slightly different. Aquiring one may not be quite as simple outside the SKY dealerships as SKY will obviousley want an extra subscription off you. I got mine from a freindly TV engineer "in the know". Cost me £50.00 but I would think you should be able to source one cheaper on the web. There are a few different LNB fixings on variouse dishes so make sure that whoever you purchase from knows the fixings you have.

Hope this helps

you dont need a dual lnb , you loop b to lnb out and connect your incoming cable to A. this gives you 2 tuners with which to record ?

You do need a new lnb if you want to watch one channel and record another as they may be on opposite alignments (some are vertical some horizontal) You can buy them for about £10 inc p&p on eBay or speak to a sky installer when your out in your shopping clothes. You will struggle to find a dual lnb now as most are quad to allow for a second box but just use two of the outputs.

Dougie,

It is just a straight LNB swap, BUT the fixings point is well made. A lot about a dish's performance is due to the matching of the LNB to the dish. This is not rocket science, merely physical geometry, but get it slightly wrong and your dish performs significantly worse.

Just another thought, make sure it will fit, they should all have the same size clamp but I have just noticed on Ebay that some quad ones come with their own clamp to mount on the end of the arm which is fine for your mini dish at home but not sure about your oyster.
Here are a few I have seen

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I have successfully used the Sky+ box (we are signed up & do have one) in the van with the existing single LNB on the Oyster dish, so I can watch one pre-recorded channel whilst recording another. However, the dual/quad LNB is needed to allow the Sky+ box to do its job as it does in the house (record two/watch recorded, record one/watch one etc).

I'll have a proper look at the existing LNB & assess how it's fixed. I'll have to be careful about any replacement LNB not stopping the dish from lying flat when closed.

The system incidentally automatically finds & locks onto the satellite, so I don't anticipate tuning problems (so long as the skew is correct). Unless I'm missing something?

Dougie.

"Unless I'm missing something?"

No you're not.

The only mildly irritating problem I've had with Sky+ in the van is that on the occasions I've been blocked by trees and unable to position myself to get around it (as easy as it can be with a dynamic Camos but blockage is blockage), I've thought "Never mind, I have plenty of pre-recorded stuff on the Sky+ box to catch up on", only to find that because of the software demands, one has to have access to the satellite to play it back! Sad

Eek - never knew that - always been lucky on sites (or ask to be relocated to another pitch, heh...)

Far too cold to be looking at the dish today.

Dougie.
