For those that have considered towing on an A-frame, here is the rig we've taken as far as Bulgaria.
The Tardis is the Euramobil and Sonic is the Daihatsu Hijet (which you need a noddy badge to drive).
So far we've had no problems at all except for the Katara pass in Greece where we simply ran out of traction. Claire had to jump out and "help" us up and around the tight bend. I suspect that is was because of our total train weight and the fact that I cut into the corner too much (you have to take it wide). If we weren't towing we would have been fine (I think )
No problem with ferries, police or anything like that. And for those considering towing a car, we have used it extensively on our first trip with it. A brilliant idea.
We decided to skip mt Blanc and instead went through Tunnel du Fréjus and paid a total of 42 euros.

Unfortunately we have a 2.5TD. It copes well on a slight incline but not with a headwind. I will consider a 2.8TD if I can make the change easily. According to my workshop manual the engines are practically identical (2.5TD and 2.8TD). We had hoped to stop by at Fiat to ask technical questions, but didn't find Italy that easy to tour in so we drove right through.
The Daihatsu weighs 940Kg, more than I had hoped, but it tows very well. Because it's so narrow, it's really great in the towns. In particular Bari in Italy and Sofia in Bulgaria.

Sadly we have had to return to the UK for a funeral (Claire's dad) and have left our vehicles in Sofia. We return on Sunday (flying of course) to resume our working holiday.
