Hi

I've been looking at all the web pages on 'web and walk modems' and think I may go for the £10 a month '3' modem.

Does anyone out thre have any experience with '3' before I order one.

Cheers
Anita

I've got one, only had it for a fwe days but it works well. I had originally intended to use it for my home broadband as the guys in the shop assured me that I would get the maximum speed at my postcode. How wrong they were and then did not want to reduce my contract to £10 per month. Sorted now.
A word of caution, if you are going to a non-3 country like France or Spain it is ridiculously expensive, your 1gb per month for £10 becomes 1gb for £3000. It is fine for emails whilst abroad, but watch the surfing.

Anita- do a "Search" and you'll find loads of info and Posts. I have the "3" USB Modem and get a very good signal from home, though usually use my normal wifi Router at home.I also had a v good signal In Edinburgh and along North East Coast recently.

Couldnt get a signal in remoter parts of Wales though. "3" are improving transmission signals all the time. Have a look at their website to get details of covertage for "3G"

I have the £10 per month/ one gb tariff & it's more than enough for my use-I don't download music/videos etc though!!

Hi Anita,

If you need a mobile internet connection all the time then the 3 usb modem is great, but if like me you only need it as and when then get a top range 3 mobile on payg for £100 (Nokia 6120) and pay £10 for a months broadband access as you need it. Mobile broadband has not been available to payg until a couple of weeks ago. The call rate is 12p per min any network and the top ups last indefinitely. Every time you top up you get free skype mins for 30 days....its a win win!
Coverage is dependant on your area, ours is fantastic and we get 3.5G (2.5 mbps) as was most of Italy!
Sorry to sound like advert for 3 Shocked

Neil

Just a thought for comparison. I use vodaphone. Works well in the UK. I get a 2g connection anywhere and 3g (broadband) sometimes. In France I get charged 8 quid for 24 hours though I usually get a 3g connection over there. I get nearly unlimited access (3 gigs a month)

Hi Teckie

3 is one of the suppliers I use along with T Mobile. You do not get broadband from Nokia but you can use it as a modem. I was at a three shop today and I asked if the dedicated modem they supply is any better than using a phone and they confirmed it is not although it does depend on the phone.

3 have the N95, there is a new one about to be released with 8 gig memory. This will operate as a modem if you want and have HSPDA (high speed packet data access) if you are in the right area. If you are you will get speeds of upto 2.8 megs.

The N95 on contract will cost you about £30 a month for a talk time package and then from £10 a month for the internet package you want.

You simply set up the phone either via bluetooth or you can use a usb cable and you are away.

The other way you can do it is on payg. I think they are offering the broadband add on for payg.

The advantage of using the phone as a modem is that you can have it when you want it (minimum purchase 1 month) rather than the dedicated modem which is normally offered for at least 18 months.

Its worth having a look at the 3 website for more detail

Hi

I had a Three modem and it was great initially - it was sent back a few days later however.

Will try it again when the network is more wide spread for the Turbo service.

Hi Teckie,

You use the PC connect software that comes with the Nokia. I use this on my laptop and connect via usb. There would be no reason why couldn't use your own 3G mobile and connection software on a 3 payg Sim only.
Hope this helps,

Neil

Edit....The Nokia 6120 will operate as a modem and has HSPDA (high speed packet data access) this is broadband speed of up to 2.8 megs.

Thanks for your advise guys. I have ordered us a '3' modem on the £10 per month contract, but with 14 days to return it if we don't like it. Confused

Going to give it a try at the show in Shepton next Friday. This will be our first rally with MHF and looking forward to meeting some of you. Smile Fingers crossed the weather doesn't turned very nasty. Confused
