Hi taking advantage of the half price offer I have downloaded the 'Western Europe' Map. I now have two maps called Western Europe on my TomTom and can switch between them although I have no way of seeing which is which Sad until I have made the switch.

Looking on TomTom Home I can see that the latest one Western Europe 675 is a smaller file (922.4 MB) than my original Map Western Europe 606 (1.3GB).

I can see that the information on the Republic of Ireland is much more detailed than before (yes I can navigate to you Cagreg) so my question is:

Have they left anything out as the file is smaller or is this just more efficient coding?

Is their any reason at all why I shouldn't remove the older map (keeping it in TomTom home)?

Sally, I don't have the latest maps (I use Tom Tom Navigator on a PDA and the newest maps aren't the same so not worth it) but I can hazard a guess from past experience.

The downloaded maps tend to come with less POI's than the ones on a DVD. I would imagine that better compression and streamlining might also add to that.

However, some countries tend to come and go with different versions. Greece is a good example. So check you have the same countries. The Tom Tom page where you downloaded it will list the countries and you can compare that with the box from the older one.

You can delete the old map if you wish.

BTW if you find you are missing some POIs then you can move them from the old folder to the new one just by dragging and dropping. There is an OV2 file and usually a bitmap ( .bmp) file for each group. But be careful that you don't over-write any new ones with the old, just if you're short of some.

If you need more detailed response can I suggest the Tom TOm forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com . You'll probably find the answers to the above on there already.

Sorry Frank, just realised it was you. Should have worked out from your Avatar, unless Sally travels in the van as part of the Bearded Lady Circus Sideshow, ....which of course I'm sure she doesn't!

Courtesy of an earlier posting on MHF went the route of upgrading to a new 720 for £175 rather than new maps and a new battery. It arrived today and as we speak it is doing a Western European map update (free in first 30 days) and is in the order of 1.7GB versus 1.5GB installed. I suspect you have an incorrect version. I think latest is referred to as version 710.xxx replacing 705.148. You can check by going to www.tomtom.com/latestmap

Guy that isn't necessarily true and unless Frank tells us what model he is running it's hard to tell. For example I use TT Navigator 6 running on a PDA and for me to upgrade to latest maps is a 944Mb download as indicated on the site.

Frank, what is your base unit? Which Tom Tom model?

Hi Frank I will be up grading my map later, however on my Go I have version 675, I believe the new maps to be 7.1. Therefore you may have downloaded a old map !! Rolling Eyes

Might be worth checking with Tom Tom.

Now that's interesting because when I go to http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php?D=4&Language=1&P=368 it says that your map should be 1785Mb so Guy has a point there! Can you use the 'browse map' function to look at the capital city of the countries you are supposed to have?

Hi jimmbo

I can position the cursor and then zoom in and see street names if that is what you mean.

Map size is around 920Mb
