No Union Jack in the header ...so maybe not coming here
Mike
Funny enough on the Ee forum where I hide less my snide comments get noticed I have just seen this:
:Oh yeah, how do you guys feel about everex's cloudbook?
Asking that here is like going to the Linux or Mac forums and asking what people think of Windows.

The concept is sound, but personally I'd wait for the 1024 * 600 display coming soon.

Q2, I guess that's calendar.
Dave
Serious doubt exists about anything being launched even in the far east in Q2 calendar Q2 financial - well who knows. Even the 4GB green case that I've ordered isn't due for release in UK until the end of Feb.
Trust me, Frank

but as they say 'and will be available in summer this year – to select countries on the first wave of launches'. Well when the eee came out we weren't the first to get it so I'll not hold my breath. Its March now and I still haven't got my 4GB green.

I've just been wandering around RM's site (we buy heaps of RM kit for schools) and come across an interactive demo

Just click on the tabs at the top of the page to see the sort of programs / facilities you get. Some things may be education-specific, but all programs should be downloadable for free, if they're not already on a non-RM unit.

I use Linux exclusively except on one laptop and that is just for software that won't currently run under Linux or doesn't work under Wine.
Linux itself consists of the OS and a small tool chain and I have seen this fit into a sub 1MB system before. Talking about the OS being 2GB includes additional toolsets and applications and is not strictly accurate.
Here is one

that is barely bigger than a RJ45 socket and includes a web server and a telnet server.
PuppyLinux and Damn Small Linux are my favorites for on the road use.

Because Linux is open source you can compile the Kernel with whatever you want included and leave out all the bloatware you don't want/need. Thats it main beauty. For example you don't need your computer to support over 200 differnent network cards recompile the Kernel and only enable the one you need. Same with motherboard chipsets, soundcard drivers, USB drivers etc etc etc. With a little work you can compile an absolutely tiny Kernel that uses very little memory at all.
This means you can run it totally from memory saving swap file paging which slow things down and leaving more memory for the applications you actually do want to run.
Secondly most pre-packaged Linux distributions included multiple versions of sofware. For example Centos comes with 4 different web browsers installed by default. Do a custom install to cut this down.
You can even make your own Linux distribution aimed at the use you want using easy tools. There are a couple of articles in the Linux Magazine this month.
What most ppl think of as Linux is not really Linux it is a distribution. A distribution such as Xandros or Ubuntu is the Linux OS, bundled with a load of GNU and other Applications and an install package and additional configuration tools. Strictly speaking Linux is just the core Kernel and tool chain.
To answer your original question Mike. I am self taught and have been on linux for 12 odd years now. I don't visit beginner sites sorry so can't advise on what is good or what is not. I tend to use google when I need to find something or look at the source code for the application in question.
If you have any specific questions I am more than happy to help though.
Cheers
Karl

Just to let you know that Asus' are having trouble matching supply to demand and as a result a number of on line shops are selling lower Spec machines.
For example the full spec Pink and Green 4Gs are not available in UK but are appearing here with USA keyboards instead of UK and the smaller battery. My supplier (Clove) has told me they are unable to meet my order (Due Feb) with the spec that I ordered. I have changed to a white one which they can source. Note that the black and white ones are also being sold mail order with small batteries and US keyboards
