So first question to them or anyone else in the know.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a weekend 'Linux meet' so those who have the knowledge can dish out the info & advice to us would be Linux newbies [which I found is always better & sinks into my brain quicker than just reading from a book]

Do you know what flavour of Linux it runs, Frank? Is it something like

, in which case it would depend on what Open Source software it included.
I use Linux webservers, but never have to get down and dirty with them. I've used an Ubuntu-like pre-packaged Linux system. It's cute. You just use the packages (like Open Office and Firefox) as you would with almost any other machine.
Deeper than this - someone else is yer man

Soon enough you'll be pleased to know that it will run XP.

Just like Gerald I have only scraped the surface with Linux and as that was some time ago, I would think things have progressed quite a bit.. as they do. Bback then I enjoyed reading through a website by a "Dr Bob" ...I have just been back there ...it still looks much the same( no frills ) but I guess it has kept up with new developments .... take a look

The last time I had play with Linux it was in in the guise of the really clever implementation called Ubuntu ( as mentioned by Gerald above) . In fact having read this thread I have just realised that there is a new version of that out too and I am downloading the new Ubuntu 7.10 ATM. I keep a "live" version in my toolbox ..it is good for booting up a PC that has Windows on it ....when you need to sort it out or salvage some files
I think having bought a dedicated Linux laptop you will get a lot of fun getting your teeth into it...I have only ever dual booted it onto a windows PC ... and then it was really only to see what all the fuss was about and so I must admit to not having given it the amount of attention it deserved.
