Hi all, just got the Tempo, and come April we will be going away for two weeks, heading for the Lake District.
We are totally new to this, but I am wondering, if we book a site for say 2-3 nights, but want to go out and about in the van during the day, how do you make sure your pitch is still there in the evening, assume NO awning as I don't really want one.
Or, do the site people just book the total number of pitches, and it becomes first come each day? If that is the case, what if not all pitches have a hook up?
Any advice on this side of things welcome, and also, if we are going in April, no kids on hols, no bank hols, do you all think we can just turn up without booking, as I would like to wild camp a bit, and use sites a bit to top up water etc.
Congrats on the new van. Hope you're going to enjoy it!
You need a pitch marker - a little sign you can leave on your pitch when you go out. Ebay or the advertisers in the magazines are sources.
Finding a pitch midweek should be OK, but I'd always book for a weekend pitch. Personally, I'd always at least phone up in advance to check availability, especially in a tourist area like the Lakes.
I think that it is best to have a sign saying something like 'Pitch occupied by motorhome'. If you are in the Caravan Club then you can buy one from the site office for about £5. Some people just make their own. It can be placed next to the pitch peg/number.
Some people leave property on their pitch such as chairs, tables, etc., or even their hook up cable (not recommended).
It is important to leave some indication that you are occupying a site, particularly a C.C. site as any newcomers, particularly caravanners, may come and set up with awning, water, waste, etc., before they check in at the office to let them know what pitch they have selected. When they find out that the pitch is already occupied by a motorhome then they are often reluctant to move.
If staying at a CC site don't arrive before 12.00 noon or you will be off to a bad start with the wardens. This is a sensible rule as the leavers are expected to go before that time so you don't meet each other in what are often quite narrow approach roads.
Weekends are nearly always well booked up in advance - Friday and Saturday nights count as a weekend. For the Lakes I would book first thing in the morning if I were you as that area is always very popular.
If you fancy wild(ish) camping you could look at the CC Certificated Locations. No more than five vans to a site, which is very often the corner of a farmer's field. Basic amenities in most, though they vary a lot and some are as good as the main sites.
If there is anything you are unsure of when you arrive, ask the warden. If you tell them it's your first time on a CC site they will be only too pleased to show you the ropes.
. . . if we are going in April, no kids on hols, no bank hols,

Hi,
Because Easter is very early this year some counties are having the school holidays in April others in March
As you are in the CC have a look at their website for vacancies which you can do without commiting yourselves to a particular date. Their sites in the Lakes are very popular.
We rarely book in advance for midweek in low season but have done for a club site near London next month.
Enjoy your trip
Steve

I looked at the CC site yesterday for 'late availability' over Easter.
All are booked solid already without any vacancies throughout the weekend except some Scottish sites and, oddly, many in Devon and Cornwall. I can only assume that the South Eastern and Midland hordes consider it too far for a three night break.
You'll neeed a bucket somewhere in your motorhome ( grey water drainage on site with no easy access to dump, for clothes washing, etc etc.)
Paint or felt tipped pen your registration number on it, fill it full of water and leave it on your pitch. It won't get blown over, there's no point in stealing it as it has your number on it and it is heavy to move as well as obvious !
