Am looking to go to mainland Europe later this year.
Could anyone please help with the difference between the Camping Card International (CCI) and the ASCI please?
Are both necessary or is it a good idea to have both?
And I am a member of the Caravan Club but the CCI website points me to the Camping and Caravan Club for a CCI card - I don't want the additional expense of another membership if possible. I notice that messages from March 2007 say the Caravan Club can issue membership but I can find no mention on their website.
The Caravan Club supplies the Camping Carnet (CCI) for only a few quid, and I don't think you even have to be a member.
It's very useful because at places where they want your passport you can usually hand in the card instead. It also entitles you to a discount in some places, but you usually have to ask.
Don't know about the ACSI Card [MHF Link] as I've never had one. There's lots of info if you ask Mr Google.
CCI acts as an identity card that works as a substitute for a passport, so when you check in you can produce your card as identification. It works on many sites, and costs £4.50 I recall through CC&C. Worth having in case your ever set off from a campsite and forget to coleect your dosuments.
ACSI is a discount card and again worth having as you can stay according to the site for 12, 14 or 16 Euro all in at participating sites. Also recommended is the PC program that can be purchased separately as it can highlight sites that are open at a particular time of year, and other search criteria. Then is plans a route for you.
Thanks for the info - I will contact the Caravan Club next week and see what they say .........
.... and I had using a tried using an internet search program ... but couldn't get any difinitive information on the difference between the two types of card though.
Thanks Legend - you reply came up after my last message was sent.
The key point for me is that you think that it is worth having both the CCI and the ASCI. (I have also sent off for the Swedish version - much confusion reigns).
And having the CD/DVD version - which means that a PC is required - and I was contemplating such a purchase for the digitial photos.
Can you give me any information on how you use the CD/DVD in practice? Perhaps this sounds like a silly question - but a book is immediately available in your glove compartment. Do you have the PC on and research an area and then take notes of where you are headed etcetera.
Any information about your experiences would be appreciated.

Hi,
The 1332 sites in the gude book accept the discount card, the remainder of the 8700 listed on the dvd will not.
Do I take it from your post that you are slightly negative about the DVD - or the sites in the DVD? Or is it that the sites listed in the guidebook are sufficient for most people?

As has already been said.
The CCI card is an international camping insurance card and the ACSI Card [MHF Link] a campsite discount card at participating campsites.
We take our travel insurance (Red Pennant) through the Caravan Club and a CCI card come annually through that.
As well as being able to leave the card in lieu of your passport there are a number of sites which offer discouts to CCI card holders if you produce it when booking in.

Hi,
Reading the post again it does seem a bit abrupt but that was not my intention.
I have the card and the DVD. I can't speak for other people but I find the DVD very useful for checking an area for sites. The only downside to the book and DVD is the lack of GPS co ordinates. I contacted ACSI on the subject and they replied.
"Thank you for your e-mail. There won't be any GPS-coordinates on de ACSI CD in 2008. But we are working on it, so maybe in the near future there is a chance we publish the coordinates."
