Hi, we usually travel the planet in the company of another motorhome and when we do it is really useful to be able to contact them without continually stopping and starting. I have tried a cheap pair of 2 way radios but they tend not to have much range and we also have problems with feedback.

Any recommendations of a system that gives good value for money would be really helpful

Thanks

In your situation I'd probably try the deregulated radios you already have but with an external antenna.

CBs would give greater range still.

Ham radio further, but you need to pass an easy exam for a licence.

I bought the UNIDEN system recommended a year or so ago in the Caravan Club magazine, and have found them to be excellent. They are robust and well-made, with a decent range, and hold their charge for a long time.
We used them in France last year and have been very pleased with their performance.
Best wishes, Strathspey

I bought two used Icom UHF handhelds from ebay... they are good radio's, but a little big.

A friend got a quad pack of PMR radio's that boast a large range and they do work quite well... think I spoke to him about 6 miles away via one of my Icoms.

I got two and you can leave one in the van while you are out and it will turn itself on when burglars go in due to noise. You can then hear your £50k motorhome being ransacked but unfortunately, this is only in mono and NOT stereo so not as good as it could be.

I gave missus one in Tescos and I had the other one so that when we were going to meet up at the checkout we could buzz each other but I was to embarrassed to use it front of other shoppers and so was she so that turned out a bit of a waste of space these radios.

When we used to go shopping in town our "ham" family G4WIZ, 2E1DMM, 2E1DMK would be equipped with handy-talkies to do their own thing but keep in contact to meet up etc.

Then we all got mobile phones ......
