Hi, I'm fairly new to the motorhome game and have the chance of buying a 2005 Burstner 747-2 for a reasonable price but would need to rent it out as often as i could to help pay for it.
I am aware that there is a number of companies who do this was just wondering if anyone else does this and is it worth while and do you make much money doing it enough to contribute to paying for the motorhome??
Thanks for the help

Hi,

Difficult one that, If you need to rent it out to help pay for it and you don't get enough rentals your in the proverbial ****

If you are buying from a dealer, don't be influenced by sales patter 'Oh you can get loads of rentals to help pay for it'

Secondly it is going to be your personal pride and joy, do you really want some one you do not know sleeping in your bed.

Different for a dealer like us as we run a commercial operation on the hire side.

Just my personal view.

Peter

Hi chrisgg90. Difficult on this. Problem being that if you need to hire it out so often (if that is possible) then you would not be able to take advantage of owning a MH. The advantage of a MH is being able to take off with the minimum of preparation for a day or an overnight or two as well as the annual holiday(s). It's also probable that the major periods of let would be just the time you wish to use it.

Like Peter says if you take to owning a MH as you should do, then it will be unlikely you will want someone sleeping in your bed etc.

I think if I was in your position, I would think about a smaller cheaper MH (or dare I say caravan without the risk of being barred from this forum? Wink Wink Wink ) that I could use when I wanted without the worry of financial considerations.

Best of luck what ever you decide to do.

Sue

Of course you can say ca ... cara .... carav.... that word here. After all, we do have to have something to take the mickey out of, don't we?

I concur with the opinions posted. We've had a narrowboat, a flat by the seaside, a static car... cara.... that word, and a motorhome, and we've always politely ignored suggestions that it would be good to rent out to friends Evil or Very Mad We've had guests with us, which we enjoy, but we've worked hard to get what we've got, and each of them has been our pride and joy.

I think this applies more so if the thing has an element of driving involved. I'd hate to have to deal with a situation where a good friend has damaged something we own.

Can you afford the traders insurance policy that you will need

You have ordinary motor home insurance. It doesn't cover letting out or commercial use

The people who organise claim tio have insurance as well.

That means the van is insured twice, cannot do that, neither will pay out

If having to rent was the diffrence between having one and not i would rent it no problem. The place I have been looking at say they organize everything from you insurance bookings ect and that type of motorhome i would expect £500 a week for the hire. I new someone who done this before and he got to the stage that he had to knock hires back due to not getting to use it himself. Don't know what to do as this is the model i have always wanted due to the amount of room and large garage ect as i will be using for a variety of sport

How do you know that the European owners weren't looking down on you as an RV owner then? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Seriously, we all have our own prejudices and to suggest that there is a fixed hierarchy where one form of camping vehicle is somehow superior to another is silly. You've just made the assumption that RVs are obviously superior to European vans - a presumption that I would very strongly disagree with. So you're just as guilty as the previous poster. Live and let live eh? Rolling Eyes

To return to the subject in hand (excuse the deviation from topic), I strongly suggest that anyone contemplating hiring their motorhome reads
