Hi Folks
I have a South African friend with an international drivers license and I intend to lend my motorhome to him for two weeks of European touring.
However .. my insurance company (Sureterm Direct) flatly refuse to accomodate us.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?
Do other companies allow this?
Can we take a short-term policy with someone else?
thanks

That's a tricky one, first of the International licence is only a translation of his South African licence. Then if I am right you are looking for a UK Insurance company to cover your friend whilst travelling abroad. I think you'll have a lot of problems there. If he had an EU licence it may have been easier, will his S. African insurance company help out with insurance?

Hi,
We do not have a problem with International Driving licenses although our insurance company requires a copy of the license plus a copy of the drivers passort for identification purposes. Identification in your case with your friend cannot be a problem as you personally know him.
I am sure Hertz and the other hire companies do not have a problem either with ITD licenses but of course like us, they have full dealer hire insurance which is different to a domestic policy.
There is an additional premium payable for continental use.
You could try other insurance companies, but MH insurance is a specialised market.
If it is off any help, we are with Norwich Union.
Regards
Peter |

Lending or renting motor homes out is an insurance night mare.
How long is friend in GB for. If more than a couple weeks why not get him to swap his SA licence for GB one, fill in form and send off photo and fee and SA licence and he has a GB licence valid throughout the world
When he goes home to SA he just applies to have his SA licence re issued to him |
