Hello everyone

I am looking at the most cost effective way of keeping in touch by phone whilst we are away from UK. We expect to be away for about 5 months in total this year travelling France, Austria, South Germany, Switzerland and Northern Italy. I will use email for routine reports home but need the phone for more urgent contact.

I don't really want to buy sim cards in each country so am considering a roaming sim.

Visited Carphone Warehouse and was recommended sim4travel. I am told it is free to receive calls and 25p per min to make calls from the countries listed above (and many more).
Does anyone have any experience of using this or any other international roaming sim card?
Thanks Chris

Hi Chris

We've used a sim from United Mobile

for a couple of years now. You get a Channel Islands number which is just the same as a normal UK number. Works fine and much cheaper than using a UK sim abroad.

don't know if this is any good...

If you are with Vodaphone, you can get

.
This allows you to roam, with your own sim card to most of europe.
Calls are capped at 75p, wether it's 10 secs or 60 mins.

This is what I'm going to use, and err on the side of having lengthy conversations!

Just had a look at this - you may be reading it wrong - in which case it'll cost you more than you thought! Crying or Very sad

According to the bumf on Vodaphone's website, the 75p is just the connection charge - then you're charged per minute at your standard UK rate - they also charge you 75p to receive calls. Mad

Sorry mate - eventually we'll all find a cheap way of keeping in touch.

Hello there,

Like the other poster, we have a united mobile sim, had it for about 3 years . It is perfect for receiving calls as you pay no roaming charges.

However, I am not to sure about their billing/metering. We only have short calls from the mobile yet the credit seems to go nowhere. I think we will have to check what we sue v what they are actually charging.

Trev.

Think this maybe a solution for people to call me...
If I'm in France/Spain... how much does it cost someone in the UK to call my UM mobile....?
Do they call a mobile or landline number in Jersey/Geurnsey??
I see it's only .19p per minute for me to call them PLUS a .17p connection fee.

cheers

Sprokit

Sorry forgot to mention about the rest of the cost... if you have inclusive minutes on your vodaphone talk plan... (as I do) these are used, so 1 hour to the UK, will cost only 75p (providing you have 60 mins of inclusive airtime).

Hi
Thanks for the info but United Mobile look as though they are more expensive at 29p per min to UK landlines.

At the moment Sim4travel at 25p are coming out best but I don't know about reliability so I would be pleased to receive any info also about other roaming sim cards.
Thanks

Just found this...

this is .20p per min to phone uk... you get a UK number, so when you are abroad, friends can call for the standard rate... (if they have inclusive minutes, this is free for caller and receiver).

They also have .17p connection charge for outgoing.

Anyone using this??
