In my search for internet access while away and following the threads about price reductions can someone tell me what 3gb per month is equivalant to?

Hours useage?

3gb means nothing to me.

It is the number of gigabytes of data that you can download, before being capped, or charged extra. It is, for normal usage, quite a lot. For example it is equivalent to around 30,000 pages downloaded, or in the region of 800 songs. Unless you download lots of movies and an awful lot of music files, you will probably be OK for normal web browsing, email and the like

Hi on my contract at the moment I have 250 MB per month and I haven't used them up whilst away............taking that into account the 3GB is obv about considerably more so I would say that for normal surfing you would find it really good.

What confuses me is when they say it will cost me X amount for a MB whilst abroad I wish it was so much per hour it would be so much easier.

Peter - 3gb per month represents the quantity of data you can download while connected to the internet. How long it lasts you will depend on what you do when connected and how much time you spend.

Peter,

If you just surf the net and check emails you will be surprised how little you will use.

However, if you start watching trailers, youtube videos, download MP3 files or video files, etc, then your consumption increases significantly. There is another post on here about watching streamed content from the BBC or downloading TV programs via I-Player. Once you start doing that at, say 100-200mb per program, you use it up quickly. I would say that for general surfking and emails you will get away with 1gb a month.

Tim

We had a terrible fight last night.....my wife asked me what was on the TV and I said "dust".

I treat every day as if it was my last. One day i will be right.

I've just received my "3" dongle - 3GB/month - and so far I'm not too impressed with the kb usage to view web pages. I've turned off automatic updates as well as "show pictures" and "play animations in web pages". I've only viewed about 10 to 12 pages and used 9MB, so I reckon I'll be able to view around 4000 pages for 3GB. Time will tell but I reckon I may exceed the 3gb in a busy month as I do a lot of re-freshing of pages. May need to upgrade to 7GB. Does anyone know if using Norton Security has any effect on usage, or anyone have any other tips regarding computer settings that might help?
Thanks.

I am no expert but my experience of Norton is get rid, and use something else AVG for instance.

I have had 2 different puters of high spec with Norton installed and it has been my experience that Norton slows the whole lot down.

don't know if it helps... but to open this URL....

takes around 207 Kb, there is 1024 Kb to 1 Mb (megabyte) and 1024 Mb to 1 Gb (gigabyte).

On these sums, you could open this link 2865 times! or 95 times per day (30 days per month).

hahahah

For me using 3 USB modem, I have 3GB a month.

Well it shows up on my useage page on Three's web site as mobile data (MB) 3,071 and whilst away recently I used the internet and spent maybe an hour or so on the internet in the evening. I turned off automatic up date and pictures and found when I got home and checked the useage it was 3,051.035 so I hadn't used very much. I used a bit more if I din't turn off the pictures. I was away for a week.

I don't have norton as that uses a lot of resources and have the free AVG as my anti virus, zonealarm for my firewall and windows defender.

So for my useage of emails and surfing web I reckon it is fine as I never seem to use my allowance in a month.
