We bought our TomTom One Europe just a little over 12mths ago, but I can't remember what the deal was with regard to updating data. Recently when I've plugged it into my pc it's told me that my map is out of date.

Do TomTom provide free updates for the first 12mths only?

It seems to me that within a few hours, let alone days, even the most up-to-date road / map info is out of date somewhere, (but the compass part of it is always likely to point in the right direction!). What's the longest any of us have run a sat nav system without bothering to buy / acquire updates?

I can't determine whether my One is version 1, 2 or 3. How do I find out?

I run a TomTom GO 300 Euro-maps version 5, had it about 3/4 yrs and (touch wood) have not noticed any major problems with the road layouts. One I have noticed is the new A1/M62 junction is not on my maps but it has not caused me any problems.

I believe that there are no major road alterations from one year to the next to warrant updating the maps, I may decide to update in the next couple of years or if the unit goes defective.

I think it is the first 12 months only. This allows them a continued 'revenue stream', so that even after the initial hump of satnav sales dries up, they can continue to make money.

We've only had a few occasions in the last 2 years where our TomTom's understanding of the environment is totally different to the reality, so it hasn't been a huge problem.

Having said that, I intend to treat ours to new maps near to the summer, before our big holiday. For our 910, a new

I recently upgraded after over two years taking advantage of their half price January sale, the main reason was Ireland. The maps originally sold to Tom Tom for Ireland were very patchy only main roads. Up to then we coped with the occasional problem, the A1 M1 link was one of them a new road near Croydon another. Strange when we sailing along on a new road or as Tom Tom thought virgin country side, Jane always defaulted to 'in 80 yards turn left' Smile

We did of course for free upgrade the operating system several times over that period

I agree with Minerva on this: you don't really need to buy new maps very often. The 10 mile stretch on the A1, north of the M62 is notoriously 'foreign' to all but the most recent Tom Toms, and they have map upgrades (via the Tom Tom website) built into their purchase price.

Our Tom Tom Go 710 performed excellently last summer during our tour of the WW1 battlefield sites and down into Provence - not one mapping error. Good value I think.

We didn't have a map for Slovenia and Croatia last summer and, while we managed, we will buy one when we go again. I believe they are now available.

We've not updated it- TT 700- since it was new for Christmas 2005 and have not made any mistakes due to out of date maps. There have been new roundabouts and road layouts but you can always tell where the road you are meant to be on goes.

We did think about updating it with the recent New Year offers but never got around to doing it. I don't think we'll regret it !

Hi I bought a classic in 04, on the way through France that year it tried to get me to turn the wrong way down a slip road, the road had recently been dualled. I was just awake enough to realise that wasn't a good idea. Laughing

This year I downloaded the latest maps and of we went to Portugal, but as we were driving through Spain towards burgos on a brand new motorway it came to an end!! tomtom is telling me to continue, but the presence of a digger and various other bits of machinery convinced me otherwise. We spent the next hour grinding up the side of a mountain and down again, where we had a splendid view of the rest of the motorway in the course of construction.

So no matter how new the maps, there will be anomalies. Laughing

I too updated our Tom Tom One Original in the January Sale at a 50% discount but had to buy a new chip on which to fit the new maps as they're bigger than the oroginally supplied chip can handle.
With the regular free software upgrades the 'look' of the system has changed dramatically from the original software when we bought nearly three years ago.
The type of One should be on the base of the unit and can also be found in 'Change Preferences' then 'Show version'.
