If you can tow a decent sized trailer, why not look for a secondhand "traders" trailer, with a ramp and good headroom.
They may look a bit boxy, but do the job. Leave space for your biking clobber and other incidentals for motohoming, like extra water tanks, toilet cassette, campng chairs, barrel of beer !
I use a "Minno" by Brian James, but then, I do tow an 1800 GoldWing Laughing
But many in the Goldwing organisations use these less attractive but perfectly practical trailers.

We considered one but they were too expensive, we bought an ordinary motorbike trailer instead.

Hi Duadua & Wizzo

Thanks for the link on the hydralift, but I'm considering buying a smaller Eurovan so am concerned about staying within the tiny payloads offered by these vans. Hence my interest in the single wheel trailer setup.

Having to reverse wouldn't be a concern for me. I already tow on an A-frame, and it's not difficult to unhook the Smart TOAD on the odd occasion I need to reverse longer than a couple of metres. I'm guessing the bike towing hookup would be fairly quick to unhook, but then I'm never in a hurry anyway Very Happy

As Barry says in his earlier threads, the wear on a bike tyre is because of the horsepower (and similar brakepower) being transmitted through it when under power. As a trailer it is simply rolling along, unpowered and unbraked. So I would expect the tyre to be virtually unworn from trailing, as are the tyres on the Smart after towing down to Spain & back twice!

Thanks to Spykal for compiling the links. It's a pity Barry&Sue are no longer members, as I'd have liked to talk to him. But he seems to have got on well with the device after using it in France, etc.

Cheers

Bruce

We use an Ifor Williams box trailer but it weighs about 1.6 tons with our two bikes, but we can just ride in on the full width ramp. However it makes us very long with our Riveria 181G. Another problem with towing is the very poor traction from front wheel drive [Fiat Ducato base] easy to get stuck on grass.

Hi everyone thanks for the replies as regards the easylifter i had already thought of using one but i am keeping my options open, the Pheonix trailer is probably the one that i will go for mainly because it folds in half and is easy to store.

Hi Dave,I have pulled my trike on a trailer behind my van.It was one of these towing dollies you know two wheels and a place to put your front wheel into.it towed fine but I was not sure if I could take it aboard or even legally use it in the UK (as a dolly it it only meant to be used for recovery)
Anyway i have had a Gl1000 converted to a trike and i then needed a trailer and I saw one for a solo bike on ebay at a very reasonable £400 made. I call the guy who's name is Matt,we discussed my requirements, and as I wanted one with a drop down ramp (for ease of loading) on it and the floor all covered in checker plate. He asked me to e mail him a drawing with the dimensions required to work out a price for me.Sure enough a couple of days later he came back with a very reasonable price of £475 and this also included three ratchet type tie down straps and a spare wheel and jockey wheel to aid movement.Last week I went down to Bracknell to collect it.It tows very well behind our van empty but I have not had my trike on it yet as I only pick iy up on the 26th of this month.I have loaded my mates 1500 wing onto it with ease.just leave it hitched up!!! Call Matt on Mob 07988 756653 to enquire

I have been looking at those trailers myself, as you say a little on the expensive side but the plus is they dismantle without tools and then you can even fit it in a car boot, so they say, so in your garage it would be out of site when camping.

When I get around to it that will be the type I will buy, when I say get around to it, I'm too busy riding my bikes at the moment Very Happy
