Hi mike,

If you fancy a bit of snow try the vosges region of france (dept - 88- ), its the closest snowy region to the ferries and i can recommend a lovely site at la bresse -

very friendly people (limited english) and in a great setting with good facilities.
If you're a bit more adventurous then there are aires at Gerardmer and Xonrupt longemer, i'd particularly recommend the gerardmer aire (not picturegue but close to the town), we've stayed there a few times and its very convenient for shopping and nightlife. The xonrupt aire (outside the municipal site) is also a great place for an overnight stop and for a small fee you can replenish your tanks, have a hot shower and do your washing before exploring the vosges area. Loads of ski-ing, tobogganing and snow shoeing. A great place for the outdoor type.

PM me for more info,

pete.

Thanks Peejay, I have to admit I didn't even think about going to the skiing bits , will give it some consideration.
Hi Mandy and Dave The site sounded just the job but I checked up on the net and they are shut mid December, but thanks anyway. Will have to plough through some of the books that I have to see if I can come up with a site.

Hi Mike,

Pete is definitely right that the Vosges region is very attractive, especially if there is snow. Which is, unfortunately, not guaranteed. However, though from Calais you can avoid the nasty part around Paris, it is still quite a long ride. Consider one full day on the road one-way.

So why not Normandy? You can also reach it on a motorway directly from Calais, but it's only about a third of the distance to Vosges. OK, the weather there may be more "British Standard" than in Vosges, but there are sufficient indoor-activities possible if it is too bad outside. Just think of the Bayeux Tapestry without hordes of tourists...

Best Regards,
Gerhard
