Help! We have just bought an Eldis Autostatus CKSE which has a satellite tv system. what do I have to buy to connect to our TV? Does it have to be a skybox and if so can I buy one without having to subscribe to sky on a monthly basis. Can I buy a digibox? Would appreciate any information as we are new to this gamebut already love it!!
Thanks in anticipation

So what have you got on the end of the satellite system you have just bought? What make is the dish or any associated black box? The make of the motorhome itself does not shed any light as satellite TV is never a standard option. Do you merely have a bunch of cables in a wardrobe/ locker? If so what are they? Is the dish a manually adjusted one or is it motorised? If motorised is there no black box that controls it?
I am not sure whether you already have a Sky system at home, but have a look at the following for a digital receiver with no monthly subscription:

£150 to be installed at home, with no requirement to connect to a phone line (Sky will if you wish), and you can take the box and card with you in the motorhome.

I'm struggling to set up a system, I bought a Hymer with all the fittings for a Kathrein satellite system, so I splashed out on a receiver, and so far no picture. As far as Sky digiboxes are concerned Transliesure has them for sale at £199 and they're out of contract. They also say you don't need an inverter to run it. You should be able to get terrestial TV without a digibox I think, but can't swear to it.

1) As to your own problem, you have a "Kathrein satellite system" (whatever system means ....), a receiver (of some sorts), and a TV (with no picture). What have you got, connected how and what have you tried that doesn't work? Is there any life at all? What had you intended to do?
2) I thought the 12V Pace Javelin satellite digiboxes were all sold out. If Transleisure still have them, and a digibox independent of an inverter or other mains is attractive, then they are worth considering. Otherwise £200 is far too much to pay; look at my link to Sky Freesat above - dish, LNB, digibox, installation and free-to-view card all for £150.
3) Terrestrial TV is one thing; satellite TV quite another. Terrestrial TV can be analogue or digital. Analogue receivers are built-in to the TV; digital receivers may, or may not be. Where not, a separate terrestrial digital receiver is required and is almost always a separate black box to a satellite digital receiver (digibox).

I don't often make recommendatons - but I have found this site extremely useful in respect of Satellite tv in the motorhome.
It may contain the answers you need.

If you have the standard kathrein receiver its default transponder is for the german digital platform. A pace digibox or similar will pick up the sky channels that are not digitally encrypted(blocked) and there are plenty of them without a sky card.
Kathrein have a website www.kathrein.de/ where you can download the manual for the receiver if you dont have one. You will have to program the transponder codes for each UK channel if you want to receive them.

interesting Barry, I have done the online update to refresh the channel listings, but hadn't thought about adding new ones manually (Obviously too busy working on websites !!!!)
How did u go about doing this as there are bound to be other channels that Kathrein doesn't include in its online updates ?
i.e. where did you get the channel info from etc and how did u input it.

I will attempt to upload the file which if my memory serves me I found on the astra website. Any Kathrein users will need a manual to add channels and add them to a position on their receivers. I only discovered all this long after purchasing sky.

which has all the latest news on who is doing what to whom in satellite. The big news at pres is that ITV is no longer encrypted and is free to view. Dont know how long for but it is yet another channel availble without a card.
Owners of digiboxes should be aware that there are a large number of channels available without a sky or freeviewcard incl BBC channels. All your box needs to know is what transponder frequency they can be found on
The default transponder is.
freq: 11778, Polarisation: V' Symbol rate: 27.5 ,FEC 2/3
This is found on the digibox in the installer setup which can be found by selecting services then system setup then pressing 0 1 select which takes you to installer set up, select default transponder and check the details and change to above if not present.
I have not done this with the kathrein system only with the digibox but can see no reason why it would not be a similar method. Definately a manual job with the Kathrein.
cheers
