Hi Bob, I take it you have bought your dongle on a contract? I may well go down that route with "3" eventually but the £1/day T-mobile option looks more attractive as I would not need laptop access in the winter months.

Hi. Don't be tempted to use the T-Mobile £1/day in mainland Europe, it changes to something like £7.50, not sure if thats a day or an hour.
Cheers Sid

Just back from local shopping centre after deciding we would go for a second phone for the wife and add a T-mobile PAYG sim card in order use £1/day mobile internet option.
CARPHONE WARHOUSE - The guy reckoned he only had a couple of phones in his shop that could be used as a modem for a laptop.
T-MOBILE - Could only sell a mobile for modem use on a contract.
PHONES 4 U - Tried initially to sell me a phone around £80!!!
I'm looking for a phone as cheap as possible and I'm not much further down the road to buying one as I got the feeling there was more to learned on this subject on this forum than asking in the shops.

1. Does it need to be a 3G phone I purchase to pick up mobile broadband speeds when using the phone as a modem with my laptop?

2. What other compatibility issues do I need to take into account when purchasing a mobile phone to use as a modem with my laptop?

3. After finishing a session on the laptop can the phone be unplugged and used as a normal PAYG mobile phone?

Any answers /advice appreciated. Thanks.

Answer

1. The phone needs to be compatible with web & walk i.e.a Motarola V3i is what I use.

2. Make sure it has a disc for phone tools as this is the easiest way of getting it set up on your laptop

3. Yes

You need the T.moble sim card to be set to the Everyone tariff

Downloaded the Sony ericisson PC Suite and linking through that can now get the phone and computer to handshake on blue tooth but the phone asks me for a pin code. Have asked T mobile for the code but they tell me the sim card does not have one although the operator did not sound knowledgable. He also said it was the computer that needed the code to work. I was not convinced of this but rang my PC supplier anyhow and he all but laughed at me. Have tried 0000 and 1111 plus another I picked up off the net but to no avail.
Your frustrated
Ian

Hi

Or, and I am trying to understand your question is it when you are trying to make the bluetooth connection. If that is the case you make up the code - 0000 is a regular and then when you make the connection on the other end, ie the phone you enter the same code

Hi

The offer is still on - 5 days browsing for £2.50 with T mobile PAYG. Text the word WEB to 441 from a T mobile SIM.

Sorry for wandering off a bit.
