So are you saying, that if you spend an hour compiling emails while on line and on the talktalk website, you are not eating into your on-line allowance of x hour/s per day (average usage allowance)?

I have been on 3 for a couple of months now and find the coverage far superior to the T mobile that I had before. I get round the email problems with talktalk by using their webmail sevice and it works fine from all locations providing I have a signal. 3G and HSDPA seem to be best up to now but have a bit more to learn about the different signals and what they will and wont do.
I was under the impression that Talktalk mail could only be accessed from the landline that is contracted for their broadband connection except through their webmail facility. I could be wrong on this though as ISPs tend to confuse me at the best of times, and especially when it comes to email services.
It's working for me and meets my requirements anyway.
Regards

3 don't time you. They only calculate the amount of data you download.
You can be connected permanently and you won't incurr an extra charge. They do charge extra for text messages though.
Nev3 is right about talktalk. You can only send emails from the registered number. Best to get a yahoo email address and use it through Outlook Express.

I was advised by 3 tech. support to create a google email account and try using that.
The result was exactly the same! No send, but could receive.
I have been able to send at remote locations using wifi, so it cannot be that you are restricted to using the registered landline, can it!

Sorry. I can't understand why you have problems. Try setting up a Yahoo email address and then say you want to access it through POP. It should work without a problem.

Perhaps I'm not making myself clear enough, or am I misunderstanding your kind recommendations.

email addresses, using Windows Mail on a laptop with windows vista.
I wanted to continue to be able to receive and send emails, using the same mail program, and using the same email addresses, with a remote modem.
The chosen modem was a 3 mobile, but I have been unable to send.
Creating further email addesses will only cause confusion to those that have contact with me, as they know my current addresses only.
I also use a talktalk.net email address for contacts within a classic car club, and changing this would be even more confusing.
Am I missing something?

If you are using Outlook/Express, then have you tried the 'using authentication' tick box/radio button?
Then use the 'use settings as incoming mail server'
I've found in the past when using a different ISP from your email account, enabling this facility will let you send mail (SMTP) from your email address though a different internet provider...
Let us know if this helps or not.

email address?
If so, get one, and use the username and password, with authentication, just for using the three SMTP bin. Leave the POP settings (incoming mail) with your talk talk settings.
