I removed Norton from two PC's yesterday and would have recommended AVG free but they do internet banking. So this is very good value for an excelent firewall, virus prevention and malware removal in my view. This is the full monty....
I use the AVG free antivirus... I find it very effective and doesnt eat resources like other paid for antiviruses. So I can only presume the whole internet protection package is good. BUT, you can save yourself money by going on

and getting a spyware/malware program such as spybot. Also, the windows firewall is sufficient for normal internet useage.
Main risks to you computer are emailed viruses (taken care of with avg free's email scanner), downloaded files that contain hidden viruses (mainly from p2p applications, again avg free will take care of that - if your a heavy downloader, use a program such as bufferzone, also available from download.com for free) and nasty sites that hold hidden viruses and scripts (taken care of with avg free and spybot). What im trying to say is, stay away from dodgy stuff and you'll be ok with the free antivirus/spyware programs.
Thanks for that Pusser, I have now subscribed to the AVG. Only because I have had so much trouble with my lap top in the past, there are so many programs out there I was totally confused, so took your reccomendation
did I read somewhere you don't like dogs??? oops

I've used AVG fre edition for some time now. However recently I have been having problems with AVG updating to such an extent I had to uninstall it twice and redownload the programme. Now i have changed to PC Tools anti virus which is also free. It apears to have the same standard of protection as AVG and updates are no longer a problem.

I used to use Bulldog but their renewal cost about tripled, so I looked alsewhere.
I downloaded the ZoneAlarm system to try, but when tested on the 'Shields Up' site, my PC was wide open.
I uninstalled ZoneAlarm, activated my Vista firewall (I have Vista Ultimate), and Shields Up gave me a totally clean bill of health.
So I now just use the Vista firewall (making sure all filesharing is disabled), plus Spyware Doctor for spyware and virus checks.
So a third party firewall does not appear to be necessary (with Vista)

Strange about ZoneAlarm and Shields Up - I get the message that I am "invisible" from Shields Up whilst using Zone Alarm!Does Windows Vista check outgoing traffic ?Possibility of Keyloggers etc sending info back to dodgy sites is a worry.ZoneAlarm can also be setup to check the number of outgoing emails to minimise the chance of the PC being used as a "Zombie".

Hi Clive
It is strange about ZoneAlarm-I used it happily myself for some time.
Bear in mind that I downloaded it, installed it, and set it working immediately, so there is a possibility I made an error of some sort.
Also when using the Vista Firewall I made doubly sure that all file sharing was disabled-Microsoft seem to want all our PC's to be accessible to others- not for me.
Spyware Doctor should protect me from all spyware and keyloggers- I run a scan at last once weekly.
I also use Registry Mechanic and check that at least once weekly

I do like dogs and had two in years gone by although I prefer cats in the pet sense. I love all animals especially fish and birds. What I don't like is the number of bad dog owners that I see everyday from my kitchen window taking their dogs for a crap with no intention of cleaning it up even though children play in that area. I don't like dogs when they are wet as they smell but then again, cats do too.
The doggy in the picture looks lovely and certainly he\she would be welcome on my lap anyday. (Grateful for anything at my age )
