My wife and I want to leave our rented flat and buy a motorhome and live in it for a few years. We dont really want to go to capsites. as my wife is a locum nurse and she has to travel all over the uk. so..it kinda makes sense to get a motorhome.
Would you say it it safe to park up in a street/lay by and spend the night/day their. do you get complaints?
If we didnt go to campsites then would we go through a lot of batteries?
Would you advise against this idea?

There has been discussion on this point in the past and I think I am right in saying that no real conclusions were reached as to legality. As to safety; you'd have to make up your own mind about that. There are some parts of the country I would not feel safe but that is not to say I would not be safe.
What I would be pretty sure about is that it is not the most interesting way to live and you would surely miss being able to sit outside in summer or even leave your door and windows open.
As to batteries; you would have to either run a generator to charge up your batteries - and I'm sure that would go down like a lead brick with the aurthorities and residents and is probably illegal or you would have to drive a reasonable distance every few days or so, depending on how many devices you use - eg TV, computer, heater fan, lights etc.
Have you thought what you are going to do about toilet waste and dirty water ? Clean water ?
There are small campsites that give you a discount for longer stays and this is the way to go I would have thought.
Check out also the number of height barriers in hospital car parks. You will have to use public transport or have a car perhaps ?

I would utilise the CL and CS network for sure. Don't stay in mainstream campsites but the 5 van only sites are great for full timers .. space, peace and more relaxed than the streets!
I wildcamp most of the time but use a campsite about once a week to empty tanks, refill, laundry etc.
Lots have been written about where to park ... its mostly common sense, you will get the hang of it. Don't listen to the killjoys.
Just show respect ... pick up litter, even if its not yours, don't be an eyesore ...arrive late, leave early.
Power ... first get good leisure batteries .. I have 2x 125 amp elecsol carbon ones which are great.
One night on a site, plugged in will give the batteries enough charge for 4 days parked up and with the solar panel will be good for a week or more.
Solar is good ....get as big a panel as poss ... and a battery master to keep all the charging in order.
Other stuff ... led light bulbs, a Sog bog, a wind up lantern ...all good.
Generators ... urghhh ! If you really have to I suppose they are
convenient ... but in 6 years of fulltiming I've never used one.
Lastly ... just do it ... ignore the "no you can't do that" crowd and have fun.
ps.. oh ...did i mention using old chip fat as fuel ?? maybe later !

Well I am one of the killjoys. So many people are wild camping that motorhomers are getting a bad press. It is now becoming difficult to park in many places as local authorities are tightening up.

It's not just motorhomes though, councils seem to have declared war on anyone parking anything anywhere. I think it's going to be interesting to watch what happens in Windsor where they are doing away with a lot of the yellow lines.

I don't have an issue with parking in the streets etc, as long as no nuisance is caused. I just think that if you are working a full time job, it is nice to come home in the evening to relaxation, a bbq, large stiff alcoholic bevarage and a lovely view to while the evening away rather than hiding away in the van, blinds pulled, hoping no one notices you!
This is why I full time using the CL & CS networks, each to their own though, everyone is different, but for £30-£60 a week (inc disposal and usually electric) depending upon location, they cannot be beaten!
