I am hoping to take the Trollstigen ( Trolls ladder) from Andalsnes south to Valldal, across the ferry and then south to Geiranger (road no. 63).

Is this suitable for a medium sized motorhome (Autosleeper Polensa), length 5.7m? I am used to Scottish single track roads!

You should have no problem, my motorhome is over 7 metres and I had none whatsoever. Full size coaches loaded with tourist from cruise ships also travel up and down it, you have to watch out for them, it can be a bit scary if you meet one coming in the opposite direction.

and if you do meet a coach the best place to pass is just before or after the hairpins.

Otherwise no problems the gradients aren't like some of our UK passes. like hardknott for example

see here for pics of Trollstigen in part 3 of my blog

I see from another thread that your journey may be in May be warned the trollstigen doesn't always open in May.

Many thanks peedee and Frank. That has set my mind at rest. Your blog Frank has some wonderful photos, cant wait to get there!. This will be our first trip to Norway so it will be quite an adventure. I noted what you said about the road being open in May. It will probably be June before we get there so hopefully it will be ok by then.

Kind regards

Peter

Howdo skipper and welcome to MHF;

We're off to Norway in June as well (Newcastle-Haugesund on the 10th) , keep your eyes peeled for a silver Hymervan and pop over and say Hi if you see us Smile

I can snow quite heavily even in early June as my pic taken at the top of the Trollstigen shows. Don't worry about it though their snow ploughs make very quick and light work of it and they clear the road in no time.
