Hi this time next year I was planning to be trawling Germany for my ideal van (Hymer s740 4/5 years old). I have seen all the encouraging posts, thousands of pounds could be saved apparently. Now as the pound sinks relative to the euro I am becoming a little dispondent. Is it still economical sense to import? How far does the pound need to fall before importing becomes uneconomical? Has any one impoerted in the last month - was it worth it? Yours still in hope Dick
I suspect any difference in prices will be only temporary - not in the euro / £ exchange rate, but in the prices charged by dealers not going up as fast as the independently bought vans from the euro zone. Most dealers will have bought their euros forward, so would have been cushioned by any drop in the £. We've seen stories on here about people who have vans on order from Uk dealers who have been asked to pay a premium before they collect their new vans; sometimes the dealer hasn't hedged as much (or at all!) as was needed to cover the currency loss. It'll level out & the price you pay when importing will still probably be less than the UK dealer is quoting, because most of the dealers on the continent work on a lower margin than Uk dealers.
The thing to bear in mind is that you will be carrying the currency risk - it may be worthwhile getting your bank to buy the contracted euros forward if you do the deal overseas.
Another thing to bear in mind is that if the £ stays at this level for any time, most new motorhome prices will have to rise - even Uk manufactured units - , because the majority of the base vehicles are made in the euro zone.
