Hi Gerald,

Will probably need the next couple of months to get my head around the features on the D300! Seems a phenomenal camera with enough to keep in a lover of technical bits like me occupied for a while!

Stew, I haven't lost any files yet either and I use digital all the time. To me it's about soul, meaning I find digital just a means to an end. However, I just have to fondle my Mamiya 7 with its beautiful lenses, whilst my modern Nikon digital (something with a number I don't recall and will be superseded by something 'better' every six months) holds all the charm of a Japanese toy.

I've read passionate discussions about today's comparison between ye photography kit of olde and modern digital, and I'm happy to stay on the side of the yet-to-be-wholly-persuaded-by-digital bunch of luddites.

I have guitars hanging on my wall from the 1950s, 60s and 70s and for as long as I can remember people have told me that modern is better because they do this, this and this. I pull out my Fender Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul and their ilk, stick it into my Marshall stack and let that do the talking. I then remind them that their new-fangled axe will be worth squat in a couple of years time, whilst my battered old gear from yesteryear is out of reach of all but the most afluent guitarists and collectors. Oh, how I wish my old analogue kit would grow in value in the same way.

Until a digital camera can out-perform (to my eyes anyway) a decent medium format with appropriate lens, then I'm going to keep all that old gear. I just love rotating the lens barrels, to feel the quality - all that heavy glass which ultimately produces a 6x7 transparency with detail and clarity that most digital users will never see and appreciate, because they see most of their shots at 72dpi on a computer monitor, or a 6x4 print.

Ah, and did I mention the two old Jags gathering dust on the drive? I just can't bear to part with them. By now you should be hearing the music from the Hovis advert.
