Last September I invested in a Traffic Alert subscription with Tom Tom. When I tried to log in on the OHs mobile it wouldn't work. I eventually discovered that our service provider, Tesco, don't support GPRS on their network.

So last week I signed up with T Mobile and got a Nokia 6300 phone. Bluetooth and GPRS compatible. Thursday evening I managed to get a local weather forecast from the Tom Tom via the Nokia but still no traffic alerts.

On Friday I phoned T Mobile who told me they 'don't support Tom Tom services'. I tell them that it doesn't need their 'support' but is a standard part of the GPRS service. They're adamant and tell me the weather forecast I rec'd was a fluke.

So I phoned Tom Tom who say that obviously T Mobile customer care staff don't understand how the traffic alerts work and of course the service will work on T Mobile. So I ask them why I can't receive it. They asked for the phone details and tell me that because the 6300 is not on the Tom Tom approved list it won't be able to access traffic alerts. I pointed out that the Tom Tom approved list has appeared to stay the same for two years and it's highly unlikely you can buy any of the phones on the list these days. They are adamant the 6300 can't access their services.

On Friday evening at Warwick CC site I tried to log onto the traffic alerts via the 6300 and it worked perfectly. It also worked on the trip from Warwick to the NEC for Crufts and all the way home to North Yorkshire this evening and it even altered the route twice based on updated traffic info.

So the help desks of two major comms co's got it entirely wrong. What hope is there for the ordinary punter when the so called experts don't know what they're talking about.

Andy

Unfortunately, the lack of any training on the products they sell seems to have migrated from the high street, the likes of Comet, Curry's, PC World, etc., to online customer services AND to many technical support lines also.

Companies nowadays seem to be satisfied to just provide someone on "the end of the phone line" to justify calling it customer services and support.

Just a sales ploy, perhaps.

Michael. . . . . . When in doubt, try it anyway, and learn from your mistakes!
