Prior to the 14th century, the league was normally taken as a 1½ statute miles, or (better) as 12 furlongs. After the 14th century, a length of 3 miles became the norm - a league at sea would be 3 nautical miles, and on land 3 statute miles.

When we discuss weights an measures on here, most of us refer to our vans as being, X.X meteres long with a payload of xxxxxkG's and the price of fuel as being xx.x per litre.
Yet we drive our vans at xx mph!

We can learn a lesson here from Ireland, which was presunably based completely on the Imperial system a generation ago, but which has now standardized on the metric system throughout.
Not so English copper is 15mm and 22mm . Irish copper is 1/2"and 3/4"
