Now my old chap likes to jet off on holiday to sunny climes a couple of times a year and this is his excuse....

My interpretation of something being necessary to a person is that a person really cannot manage without something he needs, or which is necessary to him. If a person can mamage, i.e. survive quite adequately, without doing or having something, then they have no need for it, and it is unnecessary.

A perception of a need to travel quickly above water and to do so faster than any ship can travel, or to quickly cross mountains or deserts where there are no roads is something which has developed out of our ability to fly. The situation you've outlined, Johnny, is of your dad, and good luck to him, doing something he wants to do. I think you'll agree that up until 1903 (and the Wright brothers), nobody needed to fly, not for any reason at all. We fight from the air and carry food, etc. aid by air, but in 105 years no need for the species to fly has developed. Millions of people alive today will never fly anywhere, but they'll be OK.

Another question arises though - why did I bother to reply when you already fully understood the point I'm making? Smile
