Diamond Dave of Practical Motorhome magazine is asking anyone with the Ducato X250 judder-on-uphill-reverse problem in their new van to contact him.
He asks for details of van model, which variant of base vehicle and which engine and gearbox you have.
He further asks that if you have not so far experienced the judder but have a new Fiat Ducato can you try reversing it up a steep hill and then report as above.
All this is in the latest (May 2008) magazine, page 73.
Yes and I think he's doing it to help out Andy Stothert in his Crusade. Originally MMM (ie Warners, who run OAL) didn't want to know
I still think it strange that it hasn't (apparently) been much of an issue on MHF as compared to OAL

True. I think people here have been a bit caught up in the water under the bonnet issue. (hate the term "water ingress" for what is effectively just a leak)
Maybe the members of OAL have sloping driveways. Must confess, the judder issue really doesn't bother me too much. For me it can be minimised by not using the accelerator, so the very occasional times I have to reverse uphill is not something that bugs me. I'll still send my input to Dave though as think these things should be highlighted and sorted.
I do however cringe everytime I see it raining outside though.

I think it may be because Andy Stothart actually broke a gearbox doing it, whereas people on here have just noticed it as an annoyance.
On here, we had scuttlegate, and everyone could see the damage that it was doing to their multi-thousand pound vans. That happened whenever your van stood in the rain - something that happens fairly frequently.
Juddergate only happens in a certain situation to some people. Some owners (me included) have never actually noticed it.

If I owned a Fiat or one of the other two I would most definitely take it to a steep hill and test it out - if only to satisfy myself and of course to get it resolved if it did.
On the leak thing, water ingress is usually referred to when water is getting in through a roof or a panel etc. A leak is when water is escaping out of a vessel or pipe etc. therefor I would go along with water ingress. Not trying to be a smart ass.
Cheers,
Greg.

You don't have to find a steep hill. Just try reversing onto your levelling ramps. This is enough to cause the judder, and if you don't use the accelerator you wont get on them. I usually take a run at them and hope that my reactions are fast enough to brake before I go over the top!! So far....so good.
______________________________________________________________ My mechanic told me, "I couldnīt repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
IF YOU CAN´T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU´VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

That sounds a bit dodgy, so far I haven't used my levellers on the new mh. But did try reversing up steep part of Minehead site. I think Andy wants us to do it on a VERY steep hill 1 in 5 sort of steep. Mine didn't like reversing on the Minhead site, quite steep past the motorhome emptying point and before getting to the pitches. It started to judder so I stopped as I didn't want to push it and I didn't need to reverse was just doing the test.
Admittedly in most cases we shouldn't need to reverse in such extreme conditions but it should cope with levellers so must try that next time I am out in mh. Just hope this darned gearbox doesn't misbehave whilst in France for 3 months!!!
Having taken delivery on Friday of a new Tempo - on a Peugeot Boxer LWB - and reading the handbook page 28 I came across the following - I don't know if it is applicable to the problem encountered by some of our members. This function is applicable in either driving or reversing uphill.
Quote: Hill start assistance
this function, linked to the ESP, makes starting on a hill easier and is activated ion the following conditions:
- the vehicle must be stationary, with the engine running
- the gradient of the road must be greater than 5%
- when travelling uphill, the gearbox must be in neutral or a gear other than reverse must be engaged
- when travelling downhill, reverse gear must be engaged
With the brake pedal pressed and the clutch pedal pressed, when you release the brake pedal you have approximately 2 seconds without rolling back and without using the handbrake within which to move off.
During the moving off phase, the function is deactivated automatically with the gradual reduction of the braking pressure. During this phase, a typical noise of mechanical releasing of the brakes may be heard, signalling the imminent movement of the vehicle.
Unquote.
This might be something completely different to the issue experienced - I am sure there is someone out there who knows - I don't
