Hi

I noticed that Orange are doing a £15 for 3GB per month contract for net access - so it appears the same as T mobile. This was advertised in CarPhone Warehouse in Leeds.

This effectively means that Three, UK Vodafone, T Mobile and Orange all appear to be fighting for the mobile net access market.

Russell

The link below will show the tariffs available via Carphone Warehouse.

When I saw the title of the thread, I came on to recommend some cream (ahem ... that a ... errr .... good friend recommended to me).

It seems I got hold of the wrong end of the dongle Embarassed

Edit: thanks for posting this, Russell. All we need is for one of them to bite the bullet, and then low-cost mobile internet access will be ours!

Hi Russell

When you've paid your £15 a month what other charges are there e.g. roaming charges like with your mobile phone.

Brian.

Hello Brian

Too much of a headache for me to look at in detail, but roaming charges do apply with Orange if using their net access overseas.

I think Three gave the market a kicking in September with their dongle, and since then, the other operators have to follow suit.

We (UK) have a long way to go to catch Italy though. Tariffs are about the same price but are available on pay and go aswell as contract.

In fairness though, 50p per day is not bad to access the net from a laptop/mobile phone etc.

Russell

I totally agree, 50p a day is peanuts but it frightens me to think what I might be charged abroad bearing in mind we will be fulltiming Europe from July 1st.

Has anyone had experience of Broadband roaming charges.

Regards

Brian.

Yes be careful when using abroad.

3 usb allows Italy, Austria, Ireland and some others but not France, Spain, Germany as yet in their £15 3Gb allowance.
For use in France I think it is £3 (or is it £4) per Mb.

Vodafone if you use outside UK is a hefty £9.99 in selected countries for 24 hours and £4.99 in other countries per Mb. So if you spent 1/2 on internet it would cost you the same as spending say 2 hours a day on internet.
Vodafones web site gave those figures for abroad but doesn't state which countries. When you click on another link for using abroad it comes up with outher prices presumably for using a mobile phone which is different to the usb dongle. So Vodafone do not seem to make their charges very clear for abroad.

T-Mobile and Orange also charge for roaming abroad.

When I did have the Vodafone data card a few years back it cost me about £30+ for a months use in France and that was only checking emails, bank etc 2 or 3 times !! so not very cost effective.

Brian

I am not so sure that there is a cost effective way to roam.

As Rita correctly says, Three will let you use their sister networks without being charged the roaming fee - so that's Ireland, Italy and so on.

There seems to be plenty of hotspots in France and that's as much as I need really. Many sites offer Wi-Fi either low cost or free.

Thanks Rita, that's answered my question. I think it'll have to be wifi as was the original plan. Don't want to spend all my pension do I.

Regards

Brian.

No Brian you don't want to spend all your pension accessing the internet Wink

I have found Free WiFi or free internet access in various places. Just keep an eye out when visiting a place. Some cafes, tourist offices etc.

Binic in Brittany, the tourist office lets you use Free WiFi and is 5 min walk from Aires.
