I have a 9/2007 Ducato that leaves a trail of BLACK SMOKE when changing gears and re-accelerating.
Changing up or down no different.
It is an Australia delivered model and has the exhaust outlet on the offside.(RHD)
If you can't pick it up in your outside mirror get a mate to follow in a car-
Looks a bit like an old Albion bus at work.
Other times (ie. not changing gear)up hill and down dale - exhaust is clear.
I may be the only one with this problem,but I doubt it.
I also have the water ingress etc. problems.
I would really appreciate any feed back.

Black smoke is a sign of unburnt fuel.The most common fault for this is the turbo, however as it is nearly new I would suggest that the engine management needs re-setting, take it to the main dealers and get it plugged into their diagnostic machine, that will show up what is wrong.There is a list of recalls for the Fiat Decato that they should have as well.

Snap ! I followed my husband yesterday to take the van for first service and had to drop back. It looked like it was burning coal and the smoke appears in exactly the circumstances you report.
Ours is a 2007 Ducato 2.2 litre ( X250 - 130 multijet)
The service garage were told and say that it is probably due to the fact that we have not used it for some time and condenstion has formed in the catalytic convertor. It can take some time to blow out they say. They are going to do emissions checks on it and we'll let you know the results.

it seems often with deisels that they need to be given full throttle for a while, if they have not been sitting unused..
Say 3rd 4th gear for a min.. get the motor warmed up first

Looks like the garage could be right then John, thanks. It's a 20 mile trip to the garage and it was still doing right to the forecourt so I would have thought enough revving had been done however.
I'm rapidly losing what little faith I had in Fiat. the garage can't get hold of a replacement oil filter ( it is non-standard ) and, despite the service having been booked for nearly 2 months now, the scuttle has still not arrived. We are told that the engine cover has been fitted however.

Accelerate with even the slightest use of Torque and smoke belows from the back. In the dark with a car following with lights on, it reminds me of my old Morris Marina that had piston slack and burnt a sump of oil nearly as fast as tank of petrol.
VW say no fault!
