There have been cases where the police and community support officers have stopped people taking photos in public places. I know this has affected some railway enthusiasts, and could cause problems for any of us who take photos. Austin Mitchell MP has tabled an EDM about it that you might like to get your MP to sign.
What legislation are they working under. There have been a number of stated cases (points of law and directions given by the High Court)to the effect that if it can be seen by the human eye there is no problem photographing or taking a video so photograph away
Here's the letter I sent to mine. (His secretary has told me that MPs are required to have the real address of a person to whom they might write, even if it's by e-mail). You might wish to copy, paste and adapt this into an e-mail you'll send to your MP:

Dear Mr Wallace,
RE EDM 1155 Photography in Public Places:
Please would you sign EDM 1155? I am a keen photographer and although it seems to me a shame that there is a need for even more legislation in the UK, in this case I'm sure from my own experience that such legislation is necessary.
Yours faithfully,
Miles Newman
PS. Please save resources and reply by email rather than by letter.
Is this that much of a problem? I've never heard of anyone having cameras, films, cards etc confiscated
Gerald
I think it is Gerald.
Try pointing your camera at some little kids in the street and see what happens. An appallingly sad testament to modern society, but in some people's opinion if you take photos of kids you must be a paedophile!!
And it only needs one do-gooder to pick up the phone, and you are guilty until proven innocent!!
This is where I found out about the EDM from. There's little in the way of specific details of incidents, except on private property, but I've seen some discussion of problems before. If it's been picked up by an MP there must be something going on, and maybe it's the start of something that might cause problems in the future if nothing is done about it.
If it's been picked up by an MP there must be something going on,....
I'd made the same assumption, and I feel sure it's a safe one.
I'm not prone to paranoia, in fact I think I'm probably immune to it, even so I do remember feeling v anxious when I was taking touristy shots from across the Gare Loch towards Faslane.
When we took our van to the local council waste recycling site weighbridge I took a photo of it and was told off for doing so : "You are not allowed to take photos on council property. " No-one could explain why, other than regulations said so. I could think of no reason at all and the photo I took was of our van and could have been anywhere so I did not delete it.
We've met this in the old East Germany and in parts of Africa but I never thought we'd see it even suggested in UK.
