Out of interest I have just downloaded a file. It was 2.6meg in size and took 4 secs to download. This was on the vodaphone dongle. I am going to do a speedtest now just for a bit of fun

It was so fast it took me back in time - see my post time and the time sppedtest thinks I did it lol. In useage it took a lot less time to actually run the test than before.

We have to bear in mind that the vodaphone is via an express data card that is recording 7.2mbps and the three is via bluetooth on a phone that is two years old and probably three year old technology. I guess each human year has to be worth a hundred mobile technology years

have been using a Tmobile PAYG card in a GPRS datacard for some time and recently got a Three USB dongle for use in UK only at the mo - possibly Italy in future.
Speeds with the three around the North West ( which is mostly a Turbo area - HSPDA ) have varied between GRS speeds up to about 800 kb/sec - typically about 600 kb/sec - although I once reached the dizzy heights of 1.2 Mb/sec. These are download speeds only of course.
i am still well pleased with the modem - its faster than at home where we have only 500 kb/sec line due to distance from the exchange.

Has the half price THREE dongle finished or, which retailer is it with?

Maybe the offer has ended as it is not showing on the THREE website.

This is fascinating but I haven't a clue what you're all talking about!
We are full-timing and in France at the moment on the way to Italy.
Would love to get easy internet access in the van but don't know how to go about it.
An idiot step by step guide would be most appreciated

When in Italy, if you go to a computer store you can buy a dongle - it will operate on the WIND network. It will have a SIM card in the pack and cost 99 euro.
If you look in the net access section of the forum, I recently added a guide on how to get on line in Italy.
