I have recently bought a Smart Trailer to tow my Smart car behind the motorhome.
I thought I would check out the insurance situation if I had an accident and the car came off the trailer.
BAD NEWS - My car insurance company did not cover the car whilst it was on the trailer and my motorhome insurance only covers the trailer (not its load) and then only for third party damage. In summary, my car is NOT insured whilst being towed on a trailer behind my motorhome!
I contacted a national insurance broker to make investigations as to how to provide cover. To date they have not found any insurance company who will insure the car whilst on a trailer.
Does anyone have a solution to this? If you are going to tell me that your insurance company provides cover can you please double check first.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi I am insured with Saga Motorhome, trailer and car, however when the car is on the trailer Third party only.

Yet if you ask for a Third party quote there is very little difference between that and Fully Comp.

I am also with SAGA. I called them for a third time today and spoke to a senior member of staff who assured me that my car WAS covered [U]comprehensively whilst on a trailer. A different story to the last two calls. I have asked for confirmation in writing. If they do confirm in writing then the panic is over.

I too have a smart car trailer with the smart car on board. I'm with Safeguard part of the Swinton's group and my comprehensive policy covers the m/h and the trailer without additional cover being required. The Smart car is fully comp insured with another company and is covered for the times that it is transported on the trailer. Safeguard also gives you UK/Europe assistance cover and is also covered accident etc in europe. However, I have had to take out a short euro cover for the Smart car whilst on our european adventure this year.

I too have been caught up in this argument many times.
I wanted to tow a trailer behind motorcycle.
Trailer insured third party only when on tow.
Even had trouble getting comprehensive when trailer parked on campsites.
Perseverence paid off, but only after a few quotes were checked out against the actual Policy document. Even HONDA INSURE were grossly missleading in saying "It's covered " on the phone, but small priint revealed contradictory conditions. They apologised but would not cover comprehensively, so guess what ? I went elsewhere Mad
Same with trailer for motorcycle behind m/home.
Third party only for trailer when attached to m/home.
Motorcycle cover comprehensive .

Just to add a twist to this, I found that my home contents insurance covered the trailer (on it's own) providing it isn't left connected to the 'van when on site, for no additional fee.

That's what I found out with my camping trailer. Covered when static.

The car insurnace company has now written the following confirmation which I received today and I quote:
Your vehicle ( my car) IS covered for accidental damage whilst being towed, the third party liability aspect would fall under your motorhome insurance but damage to your car itself is under this (my car) insurance.
So, eventually, after being given conflicting information over the telephone from various insurance suppliers including my own I eventually have confirmation in writing that my car is covered for damage whilst it is being towed.
Problem resolved.
Thanks all for your input - it helped get a resolution.
