Having previously read the threads about insurance ...

If importing from Germany, there's another option you could consider - delivery. In March this year, I imported a vehicle from Germany with delivery by Terra Spedition GmbH (arranged by the dealer). The process worked smoothly and the van was picked up from the dealer one afternoon (near Nurnberg), on my doorstep the next morning (Essex). All I had to do was take the driver to the nearest station with his number plates Very Happy

The German registration documents were sent by UPS for security (i.e., not sent with the vehicle). I was in two minds about the costs, at approx. €800 (plus tax). You can do it cheaper yourself but this seems a reasonable fee for the driver's time, ferry, fuel, etc. I didn't really want the hassle (I've imported a vehicle once before, it was fun but tiring).

This site was really helpful so a big thank you to all the members who've shared their import expertise!

Dont tell to many people what you did, because that breaks the rules for a personel Import. As the German dealer Imported a vehicle into the uk you could be held lible for Vat,

German VAT (19% Mwst) had to be paid to the dealer for the export to occur, they were not allowed to export without the duty being paid. Once in the UK, the usual procedure applied. It's the same as a personal import, delivery doesn't in any way allow you to avoid paying duty.
