Hi all
Used to have a 1978 vw camper van but sold it when the kids were babies and it got to expensive to keep with out using it . But now they are a bit older i think we are ready to start again but would like some advice.
I have a budget of £10-12k to start with to see if we all like it.
Has any one got any experience of vw coachbuilts?
I also like small a class hymers any experience of these?
Can you fit rear seat belt if so how easy?
Is it expensive to get them interior re-upholstery?
Has any one brought one from germany as there seems to be more for sale. |

Hi Crewie
We bought a old high top very cheap when we started and had the interior recovered. It wasn't very expensive but the van looked brilliant.

Hello there,
VW coachbuilts can be very expensive, though tend to be very robust. As your budget rules out the latest T5 which are IMHO the worst generation ever and the V6 petrol, then you should be okay.
With regard to seatbelts, as with anything it can be done. However it can be extremly costly.
Do some research, some dealer visits, ebay, autotrader, the web and the like and you should get a better idea of prices.
User "J99DUB" who is often online has to be one of the people on here to consult if he has the time.
Regards,
Trev. |

Hi Crewie, and welcome to MHF.
Can't comment on most of your questions but I had seat belts (lap belts, actually) fitted in the rear of my coachbuilt. Cost was £125 for 2 by Towtal of Stoke-on-Trent. They usually quote about £75 for an individual lap belt. Seems expensive but a subframe is required. This price includes the subframe, lap belt, labour and VAT. They are keen to see the van first in case it is not possible to fit a subframe.
I hope this info helps others as there has been quite a few enquiries latley regarding seat belts.
Regards
