we are off around europe soon and are definatly going to take two push bikes. We are debating whether to take a moped aswell, do you think we may be abit stranded on campsite with just push bikes. Are alot of the sites out in the sticks and will need to get on buses etc to see things. It is quite abit of hassel and extra money to get the moped, towbar etc.
any comments???

We spent a month touring Europe with 2 kids and 2 push bikes. Managed just fine. Just choose campsites wisely. Europe is generally loads more bicycle friendly than the UK.

hi alli. You never have the right tools for the job! It depends on where you go. If we go to germany / france or Holland its bikes. If its spain then it the scooter,Its all down to where you go and how long you stay in one spot! And when you say moped I think you need a little more than that for two people. Which will mean a bike test if you have not taken one.

So the first thing to look at is: where are we going.
where are we staying campsite or aires
And how long we going to stay
If you move on every 2/3 days a bike
If you go to spain for 2/3 months scooter
OR go the hole hog and get a TOAD!

Good Luck. Bob

Hi alli - your post reads as if you are going for quite a long time. We only go for 6 weeks at a time so can't really compare with your trip if you are going for longer. However, do not discount buses and trains. If they are available, they are a good way to experience the country as the locals do. We do not drive in big cities but take the train/bus from town and village campsites so have the best of both worlds.

I can only speak from experience of France, but you have a very wide range of sites from city locations to right out in the sticks. Some with very limited facilities and others all singing, all dancing ones. If you don't already have one, get a campsite book for all the locations and facilities available. Many, many threads on which books to get.

Enjoy the trip however you travel.

Sue

We were having this discussion this morning. We can carry either the Bicycles or the little motorbike in the boot but not both.
Whichever we choose we will wish we had the other upon arrival.

All part of the stress and hastle of of living in a van.
