I have been searching around for insurance for a new Carthago I51 which is on order.

Have had huge variations in quotes, variations in interpretation of NCD, and variations on maximum van value cover.

I mentioned these problems to Lowdhams, the UK Carthago dealer, who recommended NFU; reason, another new Carthago customer had received a good quote from them. I'd also seen other favourable NFU comments on this Forum.

Accordingly, I did a web search for my local NFU and contacted them for a quote a couple of days ago. Today they came back to me saying the underwriters would not insure me. The reason being that given the value of the van, they would not issue cover as I was not an existing customer for any of their products......

Has anybody else had this sort of response from NFU, or am I being paranoid? I really like farmers as well!

Give the Manchester Secret Service (MCIA) a try - I've always found them to be super efficient and well priced.

Hi Shackman,

I got the same response from NFU (among others). Value was "too high".
The other aspect that got my goat, particularly w/NFU was they could not quote me while I was hanging on. They had to phone back the next day. Also first time I phoned my local office (as directed by their H.O.), they were 'closed' for lunch!

There are better companies out there. Thumbs down to NFU.

Try Adrian Flux. They have a great reputation as a broker. I insured mine for £220

I have found NFU very helpfull, Originally went to them through a broker the only thing they required was to transfer my car insurance to them as well They insured £42000 m/h and 2 year old nissan micra no problem .
2years ago the broker lost NFU business so i now go direct to there holt office in norfolk. Having just changed m/h now paying around £550 for burstner solano nissan micra and 8foot box trailer all fully comp with protected bonus and all with business use. I Know i might get cheaper elsewhere but not with business use.

I have to admit that some of the NFU offices are numskulls, can I say that.
On second thoughts, here are the details of the NFU agent I use in Sussex.
P.Drummond Esq. NFU Office. Little Barton Farm. Pilgrims Way. Canterbury. Kent. CT1 1WN. Tel. 01227451088. fax. 01227763800.
email, canterbury@nfumutual.co.uk
Hope this helps.

The problem is there don't seem to be many brokers/underwriters who will insure high value M/Hs. Many, including Adrian Flux wouldn't touch anything over £100K. Others cut off arbitrarily at £50K, yet others at £75K. I suspect that the Carthago in question is above these values, as is mine.

Have to admit that we did suffer with this problem on a previous motorhome. It seems that it is not just the value or location but also the destinations you will be travelling to that go into the quotation.

Hi I am with the NFU, I was told when we were looking for quote's last year that the Louth branch of NFU were Motorhome specialists and not all branches were the same, we got a good deal, also they were the only one's to cover for business use , and were very helpful so try them.

The person we dealt with was Helen Smith, although that was last year.

tel: 01507 600249

(by the way I am not connected with them in any way)

I've just had a conversation with a pleasant young lady at our local NFU Office- wanted a quote for an "impending" new vehicle Wink

Anyway-she asked me for basic details- our dob, value of vehicle, engine size etc. She asked me to spell "Fiat" then "Ducato" (got a bit worried here!) and then said-oo I don't think we insure those vehicles but I'll call you back!

She called me back after an hour and gave me a quote which was nearly £150 CHEAPER than any other I'd had! I thought I'd better go through all the details with her and they checked out.

I told her my wife and I had 3pts for Speeding (she hadnt asked that previously) "doesn't matter" she said.

I asked her about NCD and she said "we give you full NCD anyway"

Personal Effects? "just tell us how much cover you want and we put it on....no extra charge"

European Cover? "Yes- tell us how long for- no extra"

Excess? (original quote was £150) "We could increase it to £250 but the quote is still the same"

She told me it would be an extra £53 for Protected NCD but I've never been sure whether that's worth it as I undertstand it's still a "declareable" claim?

She didn't ask where I'll keep the vehicle & I forgot to tell her!!

So- it all seemed so laid back and easy!- But is it too easy? (and cheap). Cabby- ever had to claim with them? Anyone else had to??

edit_ forgot to say- they didn't ask me for anticipated mileage either Rolling Eyes
