The other night on a trip to the petrol station, I lost all gears apart from 3rd and 4th. Next day in the light, the problem was found. A gear linkage had popped off. I spoke to a few people and they suspect a damaged or missing retaining clip is to blame. So what do they look like and will I be able to find new ones for my old mh?

Hi Shane

There was a really good article on fixing these gear linkages in the Feb 2005 issue of Practical Motorhomes. If you can't find a copy let me know and I could possibly scan it for you. Or borrow the mag, can take it to Peterborough.

I had trouble on the wifes Pug with gear linkages. The gearshift was very sloppy. I bought a new set of linkages and fit them. They were made up of long metal rods with cups on the ends. Inside the cup was a plastic bush which wears down. Simple fix and easy to do. Should be the same sort of thing but on a bigger scale........ hopefully Confused

I don't mind having a go at repairing, but I worry about where I would get the parts for my Talbot. I rang delphin designs and they wanted £250 for a ?recon set.

Don't know if it's any help or not !, I'm getting a little worried about parts for these old M/H's myself now Rolling Eyes

My M/H passed it's MOT last week with flying colours and we are using it for the first time this year this coming weekend... hope nothing goes wrong or falls off ! Laughing

Hi Snelly
THe delfin set is good value despite seeming expensive
It includes a new bearing for the top of the gearbox, A full set of linkages all the way from thye gearbox to the bottom of the gearstick and a new gearstick to boot. It brings the gearchange back to like it was when it was new.

Anyhow if you fancy having a go.

Take the spare wheel out (if yours is one with a spare under the bonnet.
You will see the top od the gearbox with a load of link rods attached.
DONT ALTER THE ROD LENGTHS
But the assembly is bolted onto the shaft which comes out of the gearbox by a thro nut and bolt. You will need an allen key and spenner. Tighten this bolt up tight (withour busting it)

Now get inter the van and get to the botton of the gear stick. You will see where the fork at the bottom of the gear stick bolts to the selector rod with another through bolt. Tighten this up in the same manner.

Now go and check the gearchange.
If you had to tighten any of these bolts up at all it will be much improved. Your throght bolts may have fell out so find repplacments and refit.

Its not too difficult a job once you know where too look,

Hi Snelly. I can remember that happened to me whenever I owned that model of the Tabot Express. A tip I used to get me home as the retainer clip was broken and the ball end kept slipping out of the cup. What I did and it never slipped out after I put a piece of fine cloth over the ball and pressed the ball into the cup with a pair of vice grips. We drove nearly 200miles with it never budging. If you cannot locate any clips and plastic cups to repair yours . You can PM me. I think I should have a few left + a couple of rods complete that you can have for free. Cheers Willie.
