Booked in for an MoT I was advised to take my (diesel) car, get a full can of redex, go for a fast burnup, then bring it back for test.
This heats up the engine and improves performance as measured by exhaust analysis (the garage said).
I did and never failed for emmissions reasons.
So it must be doing something?

HM Customs and Excise....recovered 100s of vehicles running on red diesel on behalf of HM Customs.

Regarding enforcement, that's the point. HMRC have draconian powers - more than the Police in this respect - and do not need to use the Courts to enforce penalties regarding tax evasion (the highest priority any Government has ever had in the history of the nation).

I've also seized vehicles with red diesel. HMRC generally hit you with a £500 fine on the first occasion, and you don't get your vehicle back until you pay it. Any subsequent similar offences, and you can expect to be hit for very large sums of hard-earned indeed. They also have the power to sell your vehicle without so much as a by-your-leave, and they do, regularly. Losing a £35k van for a few quid's fuel fiddle isn't an awfully intelligent risk.

It's a fallacy about the dye smelling, or smoking.

Dougie.

Did you mean Redex, or red diesel Skywriter?

They are not the same thing at all.

Cheers

I have just returned from Australia, diesel was $1.40 Aus. dollars a litre, approx. 65p, and it had been under 50p litre last year, returning via Dubai where diesel was 1.40 dirhams litre approx. 20p litre.
We can only dream.

Dougie
red diesel does smell different, the manufactureres tend to scent white deisel to try and make it consumer friendly (still stinks).

We had one chap that tried to sue our Citroen garage over a diesel pump fault, when we told him HMC would be interesred in the use of red diesel he never came back
