As an european hgv driver for many years we travelled throughout eastern europe on a daily basis, filling up with red diesel when we got to eastern europe in large belly tanks slung under the trailer chassis. We actually filled up at Zebrugge goods railway yard but had them sealed and T formed for travel until we reach eastern europe

The fuel system had to be fully clear of this red when we returned to the UK or the problem was serious and confiscation of truck, trailer, and the goods would cause dire consequences. Don't even go there.

Bob

what's the penalties for running on mixed fuel (e.g. vegatable oil) - is that the same as red or different - just curious rather than thinking about it(!)

Funnily enough, our neighbour was telling us of a farmer who had red diesel in his tank when stopped by the police. He claimed that his senile father had put it in by mistake - should have used the other tank, first time it has happened!

He was fined £17000, (£17K) for lost revenue they calculated he should have paid, perhaps on the mileage of his vehicle.

Neighbour has a red diesel supply for his digger, police have to be notified of the names and addresses of anyone having red diesel delivered.

If things don't settle down at Grangemouth this weekend, we may all be looking for red diesel if we can get hold of any of that, the farmers don't seem to be able to get supplies of that just now.

Take the advice, not worth using untaxed fuel, stays in filters and lines for months, but fullers earth is reputed to take the dye out,
I am Interested in a mix of veg /sunflower oil though? is anybody using a mix, have read that also has a bad long term effect on Injectors ect
was thinking about 5ltrs to 25 of gasoil. never thought I would think of this in spain? was 68c a ltr 4yrs ago now upto 119c.

on this subject of red diesel
i know some one not me thats been using it in his motor home for over two years say it improves power
told him big big problems if he gets caught
but his argument is he will plead ignorant of it
not sure the courts will see it that way though
but to my thinking surely the smell gives it away cos of dye
on subject of vegatable oil there are no regulations to prevent you using it
loads of people use it
but it must be clean
best to mix with normal diesel i part to four
to start with no difference in perfomance
but if you use it 100 % and some do
be handy to have supply on tap for your bacon and eggs lol

You are not dealing with PC plod here ,its HM Customs and Excise.
In my former days in breakdown recovery i have recovered 100s of vehicles running on red diesel on behalf of HM Customs.
One guy had 4 delivery vans ,his 4X4 and his wife's car confiscated. His fine was very big plus recovery and storage everything had to be paid before the vehicles were released.

For those that could not pay their fines the vehicles were taken to a holding compound in Kent before going to auction.

Most were stopped at roadside checks but an awfull lot were reported by neighbours or friends after some minor fallout.
