On my way to Peterborough Show yesterday, got as far as Stoke and a loud whining noise started from my back end, wouldn't go into drive properly, managed to limp back home, it's a Toyota fulltime 4WD, Automatic, this happened last year when in France, only briefly, and it's been okay since , any ideas or help you can give me will be appreciated.

You dont say how old the vehicle is, or even how you managed to get home if it would not go into drive. Can i assume there is a low ratio on this model did it work on this. noise can be transmitted along the vehicle so might not have been the rear end.Toyota's are normaly reliable as a tank.( see top gear) Laughing Laughing but a whining noise is normally related to a bearing.any burning smells or were the wheel hubs hot.
Have a 4x4 garage check it out is best.take it to a toyota dealer and ask for a quote on a noise from the back end.
