Which insurance company for hiring out your van? Forums

We intend hiring out our motorhome that we have just ordered to help us fund the cost.

Spent the day trying to find a company to insure it for just the times it is hired out as we realise this is not going to be 365 days a year. We know this can be done as we have just hired a van for a holiday and thats how our hire company worked theres.

Any advise would be really appreciated

My experience of this was as follows.

I approached various standard insurance companies and brokers.

Most said they required me to be a registered company, I was, and they still didnt want to know. its not a " standard thing " you see.
Eventually I went to a company register at lloyds of London, and they arranged personal underwriters.
The conditions were:
Public liability insurance £5,000,000
they wanted to see and approve my Terms and Conditions of hire.
They increased the premium from merely " ooh thats expensive " to " HOW MUCH?"

as a for instance, for my company, insurance for a Gulf Stream Sunvoyager, 2005, for Event and Media hospitality hire, £1450.00 per year.
also, the Public liabilty, for the industries I work in was £875.00

There is a company that spells its name "motorhome" but with an extra "l" who say they can arrange insurance for your hirers.

From memory it's about £300 - £400 per week for the insurance and their slice of the hire charge and a further £400 to the van owner

Well that's what we paid last September for a week

Helen, we're doing that (url removed by moderators) and having tried to get our own cover we decided to go through an agent. You register with one or more of about four available agencies who specialise in hiring out personally owned MH's. As and when you achieve a hire through your own methods, you 'buy' daily hire-insurance at roughly £25 per day. If you pm me directly, I can give you direct contacts.

I would double check on the 'Theft by Hirer' & 'Fire by Hirer' clause as not all insurance companies cover you for that at all, even though the some people may say they do. Check the small print!!

sorry for highjacking...

A friend of mine had a car fire a few years back... caused by an electrical fault - Insurance Co. would not pay out, on the grounds that it was not a malicious reason for the fire.. i.e. vandals, joyriders ec

Is this normal with Fire and Theft insurance?

They will only insure against Road Risk, so if a fire starts while cooking or heating you will not be covered. This is what I've been told.

I can understand there being a potential for an issue with Fire and Theft cover but surely most people have Fully Comp these days - there's often little difference in the price anyway.

good point Dave..

but what I really mean't Marlin was that if his car had been stolen and set on fire he was covered, but as he had an electrical fire, (not a motorhome related domestic fire) he wasn't covered..

anyway, I am going hmoe to fit some downlighters in me rv, making sure there is enough space above them to dissapate heat Very Happy

Yes this is fully comp for 'Self Drive Hire' insurance, not the usually private motorhome insurance. I would be very careful hiring out my motorhome through agencies as not usually covered because of 'Self Drive Hire'. They only usually cover you for road risk.
