We want to invest in a drive away awning for our Autosleeper Symbol. Has anyone any experience/tips for us on what is the best type of awning to get and what the best system is for linking it to the van. We will also presumably need some sort of skirt to prevetn draught from under the van.

We have a khyam motordome excelsior. Gavin fixes it to van using suction cups. It is great and actually quite spacious.

Hiya Sue Gavin uses suction cups for lifting glass to fix ours to van. We do not have an awning or the guttering channel on our van and gavin did not want to start screwing holes in case he messed up!!!
All you do is very gently release them and detach awning and off you go!!
Here is wee link so you can see what I am talking about. We got ours from B&Q

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the reply. It sounds very ingenious and a much better than holes having to be drilled into your body work - what a clever idea.

Do you find the suction cups are strong enough to keep it all secured to your motorhome and does it stay up in windy or wet weather alright?

Thanks again.

Sue

We have only used it twice Sue due to the problems we had with our van. However we used it for a full week, the weather was somewhat variable for windy to wet to sunny and we had no problem with it. Will try and post some pics of it if I can!!

Hi Carol,
I too am interested in your ingenious way of attaching your Drive Away. We use those suction cups to attach a wheel to the top of the hab. door to stop it catching the awning, as we didn't want to drill holes in the door but I'm intrigued to know how you use them to attach the awning. Do you fix the suckers to the top or the side of the van? How many suction pads do you use? How do you attach awning to suction pads/handle? We have a Movelite XL so we may have to modify your method a little but I would be very interested to know how you've done it.
Lesley

Hiya Lesley, I hve no idea how Gavin does it I stay out of the way!! He uses two of the double cups that I posted in the link in above post. I will get him to come on later and describe how he does it. Do know that they fix to the side of the van, just above hab door. Was sure we had a pic somewhere but cannot find it for the life of me. Willkeep looking and get back to you later.

We are very pleased with our MOVELITE (square 2008 model) Awning sold by many suppliers for around £140. It comes with a ground sheet and an inner tent if you require additional sleeping space. Only two fibreglass poles, very easy to erect. We use an attaching kit (available from the suppliers of the awning) which simply locates in the gutter rail on our Transit. Alternatively there are webbing straps that can be thrown over the vehicle and pegged on the other side.
The suckers can also be used, we have done that but am always worried that they may let go and dent the van.
More uses for suckers too. These cost 99p each.
Best of luck.
