Morning all, we are shortly due to take delivery of our new motorhome, and have decided to purchase a refillable gas system. Like many others on these boards, we have been considering the Gaslow System, however yesterday we were speaking with a representative from M.T.H Gas Systems (Alugas) which seemed to be a crediable and favourable alternative option. Price including installation was simular to that of Gaslow, however the bottles were half the weight (6.3 kg empty weight) of the steel Gaslow ones.

Further more the rep claimed that these bottles being aluminum have a greater heat conductivity-5 times more efficient than steel. The system comes with a 80% cut off valve, liquid protection tube and will provide gas without impurities due to their constant cleanness.

As usual your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

Many thanks in advance Smile

Len

We have a fixed 60 ltr on-board tank. It lasts ages and frees up the gas locker for other bits and pieces.

I also have talked to MTH about fitting the Alugas cylinders.

I would have preferred the under chassis tank but the guy said that due to my 'van being a low slung model the gas tank size would be limited, we would most probably be able to carry more gas in twin Alugas cylinders.

He also informed me, and showed me, that the 80% cut off valve is a brass affair rather than the plastic jobby on the Gaslowe cylinders.

The Alugas cylinders are of continental dimensions so are slightly slimmer but taller than the equivalent Calor cylinder. So they should be a better fit for all continental made 'vans,...allegedly.

I can recommend MTH as a satisfied customer I think we were their first customer or almost

At that time had the refillable bottles fitted.

We are going on the 11th to have a tank fitted this time as we will have the necessary ground clearance - unlike the last time

Richard is a really nice guy - helped now by his partner Marieka

Nothing to do with company - just satisfied client

I chose Gaslow refillables because they were steel

I don't know if the following is true - but I thought the steel bottles could be safer in the event of an accident

I assumed that steel bottles had more chance of getting dented where as an aluminium bottle could spilt

MTH do a neat adapter that fits directly onto the gas bottle filler connection to accept the gas pump nozzle, it could save buying the Ģ50 filling kit and making holes in the van ?

Hi Buzzer,

Both systems/suppliers are good. I understood that Gaslow were coming out with lighter bottles this month, maybe wrong but worth checking up on. It is also worth considering an underslung tank as Johnny F suggests as it does free up a locker and can work out around the same price. If you decide to go the underslung tank route then look at the Connrad Anderson prices as they appear to be slightly cheaper than MTH.

Refillable bottles or underslung tanks give you much more flexibility - particularly when abroad and the gas prices are so much cheaper (not that you will ever get your money back - unless you keep the MH for another 10+ years or so).

Also recommend MTH and also if you have space underneath a properly fitted bulk tank. One advantage of the bulk tank is the real liquid level gauge and remote display so you really know inside the van just how much gas you have. This seems more user friendly than just knowing when one of a pair opf refillable cylinders is empty. Also no flexible hoses to exude goo which might block up your fridge jet.

If you go the cylinder route then there are also even lighter ones that are also see through, made of GRP. But would you want one of these in the event of a sidways prang?

Great idea, but i wouldn't trust meself to use one. Never know when never know when premature senility will catch up with me.

Must say Maddie admire your courage for admitting to using one of those on here!!
