With the onset of freesat and free HD, all the HD TV's will now come into their own., but what is the difference between HD ready and Full HD? Not very good on modern technology!

Although I am not absolutely certain I think that HD ready means that there is a HD input and that if used the screen will give you the HD picture, You will need a HD box to get a HD picture.
HD means that the tuner will pick up the HD signal and give you HD without any more equipment.

It would be good to know if someone knows better.

Basically, HD Ready means that the TV is capable of displaying the HD standards that are being used for broadcast 720p, which is best for sporting events and 1080i, which is more suited to natural history programmes. Although it is the lowest figure, 720p is actually the better picture format as it does not require any further processing within the TV. 1080i will require further processing, but as it is recorded on more lines it is possible to get a sharper image.
Full HD or True HD 1080p is the standard that is used for High Definition discs (HD-DVD or BluRay) and is also used by some games consoles. There are at present no plans to broadcast Full HD as there is insufficient bandwidth. Over 95% of TV is currently broadcast in standard Definition (576i) and therefore any HD Ready TV will be more than capable of displaying a broadcast TV channel. In fact, on many Full HD TVs especially larger screens, standard definition TV can look considerably worse due to the artificial processing that has to be done to the picture.

Good explanation from Gerry. Another point worth noting for motorhomes is screen size. Most motorhomes and caravans I have seen have 15" or 17" LCD screens. At this small size it will be very difficult to see any difference between standard, HD or full HD resolutions. You really need a screen of at least 26" to start benefiting from HD.

Trevor,
You are absolutely right, but I have stopped giving that advice because "It stops the customer wanting to buy".

Most of the 'pundits' on the forums suggest that when buying a TV you are likely to see little or no difference between SD and HD until you get above a 32 inch screen.
